Twenty-five years ago, 2,977 innocent people lost their lives. Today, we came together to honor the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, and to remember those we lost on that tragic day.

We began our Remembrance Ceremony with the National Anthem, followed by a 9/11 remembrance prayer delivered by Fire Chaplain Jacques. At 8:46 AM, we observed a moment of silence marking the exact time the first tower was struck.

We then read aloud the names of the 414 first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice on 9/11.

We also honored the thousands of fire officers, firefighters, police officers, and other workers who later lost their lives because of exposure to toxins at Ground Zero, and acknowledged the more than 6,000 first responders and workers who continue to battle World Trade Center-related cancers.

We remember their courage.
We honor their service.
We will never forget.

As students return to the classroom, school buses are back on the road! Follow these back-to-school tips for drivers to help keep everyone safe.

🚸 Be alert for children getting on and off school buses and crossing the street outside marked crosswalks. Maintain a safe distance behind buses and expect frequent stops.
🚌 Remember, it’s illegal to pass a school bus that’s stopped to load or unload children. Watch for the flashing lights and stop arm.
🏫 Follow speed limit restrictions in school zones, and obey any crossing guards.
🚏 Drive cautiously around bus stops where children are gathering.
đźš— Double check for children in blind spots and when driving in reverse. Teach your children never to play in, under, or around vehicles.
📵 As always, avoid multitasking and distracted driving; never text and drive.

School is back in session, and safety is still everyone’s responsibility. The Biddeford Police Department will be increasing our speed enforcement patrols in school zones. These efforts are in partnership with the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Speed Enforcement. Watch for children at bus stops, obey school zone speed limits, and stop for school buses when you see flashing lights.

The Biddeford Police Department is proud to announce it has been awarded re-accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), marking the department’s third consecutive accreditation.

Deputy Chief Steven Gorton and Accreditation Manager Tracey Morton represented the department at the CALEA conference in Omaha, Nebraska, where they attended a review hearing before a panel of commissioners. Following the hearing, the commission voted to grant the department its re-accreditation.

CALEA Accreditation is widely considered the “Gold Standard” in public safety. By meeting nationally recognized best practices in policing, accredited agencies demonstrate a commitment to accountability, transparency, reduced liability, and strengthened public trust. Nationally, only about five percent of law enforcement agencies achieve CALEA Accreditation. In Maine, the Biddeford Police Department is one of just five agencies to earn this distinction.

The department is honored to receive this recognition and remains committed to serving the community with professionalism and integrity.

UPDATE (6:40 PM) - All roads in downtown Biddeford are now open.

ORIGINAL POST: The Biddeford Police Department is anticipating an event at Mechanics Park today in response to the shooting of Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero. Our Department supports the First Amendment right to free speech and demonstration. We will, as always, work with and seek to protect those who choose to peacefully and lawfully protest in our city.

Beginning on Friday, July 17 at 3 PM, the Biddeford Police Department will be closing Water Street between Pike Street and Main Street. Access to Water Street will not be available via High Street, Sullivan Street, or Piersons Lane during this time. These closures will continue for as long as is necessary for public safety. Additional road closures in downtown Biddeford may be added if we determine they are needed, including the potential closure of Main Street between Alfred Street and York Hill. We ask drivers to take extra care when traveling through the area tonight.

Updates from Mayor LaFountain on the shooting of Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero can be found on the City of Biddeford website: https://biddefordmaine.org/m/newsflash/home/detail/531.
