The City of Biddeford is seeking election workers for the November 3, 2026 Election.

Election workers play a vital role in the democratic process. They may be asked to check in voters at the Incoming Voting List check-in table, distribute ballots, monitor the voting machine, or help tally results at the end of the night.

As required by Maine law, election workers must be Biddeford residents over the age of 18 who are registered to vote. They may not be a candidate or a member of a candidate's immediate family. Workers earn the federal minimum hourly wage.

To apply, fill out this application and return it to the City Clerk's Office, located on the ground floor of City Hall, or email it to the City Clerk: https://biddefordmaine.org/5888/Become-an-Election-Worker

Thank you to everyone who stopped by the 10th monthly Mayor’s Open Door at McArthur Public Library on Saturday. I appreciate the time residents took to share their experiences, questions, and ideas for Biddeford. A few key themes emerged:

Biddeford Schools:

• Several residents expressed support for full-day pre-K, both for its educational benefits for our students and because families with a half-day schedule may still need to pay for child care. I expect the School Committee will consider this during the upcoming budget cycle this Spring.

• Parents of Biddeford students appreciated the many athletic and club opportunities that help students connect with their schools. We discussed a recent School Committee memo highlighting fall participation in athletics and band at BHS and BMS.

• Residents asked for more communication between school leadership, the School Committee, and families. We’ll work on that.

Biddeford Municipal Government:

• Several residents asked about the Charter Commission’s broader vision for the city and expressed interest in more discussion of that philosophical vision before the Commission considers individual Charter amendments. I’ll share this feedback with the Charter Commission Chairperson.

• Several youth in attendance would like more playground options within walking distance of downtown Biddeford. Those investments could be considered with use of the Recreation Bond proceeds.

• We discussed homelessness and substance use disorder, including the City’s current response and where we need to improve. City staff and local nonprofits address immediate concerns and connect people with support. Stronger coordination with the Police Department, Codes Department, District Attorney's Office, local organizations, and state resources is part of the work ahead.

These conversations help me understand what residents value and where we need to focus. The Mayor’s Open Door is held on the fourth Saturday of each month, from 10:00 AM to noon at McArthur Public Library. No appointment needed. Just stop by.

Last week, I had the honor of recognizing the St. Louis Alumni Association as the City of Biddeford 2026 Volunteer of the Year!

Founded in 1940, the St. Louis Alumni Association represents the very best of Biddeford’s tradition of community service. When St. Louis High School closed in 1970, the school’s greatest asset remained: its alumni.

For more than eight decades, they have carried its spirit forward through scholarships, youth sports, recreation, charitable giving, and volunteer service. The scale of that commitment is extraordinary: more than $1.3 million contributed by 1990, with at least another $432,000 documented since 2015. Behind those numbers are generations of alumni who organized fundraisers, operated the St. Louis skating rink, and served Biddeford as elected officials, committee members, municipal volunteers, and community leaders.

It is a privilege to recognize the St. Louis Alumni Association as our Volunteer of the Year and to thank its members for all they have given to Biddeford.

Their impact has outlasted their school, will outlast the Association itself, and will continue to be felt throughout Biddeford for generations to come.

Last week, I had the opportunity to recognize our city employees at the annual Employee Recognition Banquet.

Our employees are among the City’s greatest resources, and this event is an important opportunity to recognize the professionalism, dedication, and care they bring to their work each day. Whether providing essential services, assisting residents, maintaining our public spaces and infrastructure, or supporting the many programs our community depends on, their work makes a meaningful difference throughout Biddeford.

Congratulations to this year’s award recipients and to all those celebrating significant service milestones. Each recognition reflects years of hard work, experience, and commitment to our community.

Thank you to all our city employees for the work you do every day to serve our residents and keep Biddeford moving forward.

Happy first day of school to Biddeford’s students, faculty, and staff!

To our students: whether you are stepping into a classroom for the first time or beginning your senior year, this is a chance to explore new interests, build friendships, and discover what you can do. Stay curious, challenge yourself, and take pride in the progress you make as you work toward your goals.

To our teachers and every member of our school staff: thank you for the care, patience, and dedication you bring to our schools, including the work that begins long before students arrive. To our families: thank you for all you do to help your children start the year ready to learn.

Every student deserves to begin the school year knowing they belong, they matter, and their city is cheering them on.

As your Mayor, I wish you a year filled with discovery, growth, and plenty of moments to be proud of. Go Tigers!
