Following the Big Lake Fire Department’s open house, the BLFD was called to a grass fire in Big Lake Township, which was quickly extinguished using our brush rigs and tenders.

This was followed by a request from Becker Fire for additional resources to assist with their fire at the refuge. The BLFD deployed six firefighters, along with our grass rig, UTV, and tender. Our firefighters worked alongside several other departments to combat the fire, while our tenders assisted with filling water tanks and backpacks.

We’re proud to be part of such a great mutual aid community and grateful for the teamwork and support between departments!

Today's tip: feels hot? Stop using it. If a phone, tablet, toy, or charger gets hot, looks puffy, smells odd, or makes popping sounds, unplug it and move it away from anything that can burn.

Small action. Big impact.

Fire Prevention Week, day 2! We had a full house at the station today: kindergarteners from Liberty Elementary and pre-K through 2nd graders from Covenant Christian Academy stopped by to learn their fire safety superpowers. Thanks for visiting, superheroes!

Today's tip: fully charged? Time to unplug. Once a phone, tablet, or toy is full, take it off the charger, and don't leave things charging overnight or when nobody's home.

Small action. Big impact.

It's Fire Prevention Week! This year's theme is "Charge into Fire Safety," and our crews were at Liberty Elementary today teaching kids that safe charging is a superpower.
Today's tip: charge on something hard and flat. Beds, couches, and beanbags trap heat, and batteries that overheat can start a fire. A table, desk, or counter is the spot.
Small action. Big impact.

Sunday evening at 6:52, Big Lake Fire was called to a garage fire on Minnesota Avenue. When the first officer pulled up, an attached three-car garage was fully involved with several vehicles inside.

Firefighters kept the fire contained to the garage, and the house came through with light smoke damage. No residents were injured.

Here's the part we want everyone to take away from this one. The door from the garage into the house was closed, and so were the rest of the doors and windows in the home. Closed doors starve a fire of air and hold back smoke. In this case, that's what kept the fire out of the living space and gave crews the time they needed. It's the easiest fire protection there is. Close your doors.

While we're at it, keep gasoline and other fuels away from water heaters, furnaces, and anything with a pilot light. Fumes travel farther than you think. And make sure your smoke alarms work.

Thanks to Becker Fire and Monticello Fire for the mutual aid, Big Lake Police and CentraCare Ambulance for their help on scene, and the Red Cross for taking care of the family.

Turns out firefighters make better firefighters than landscapers.

Good thing the professionals stepped up.
A huge thanks to Monkey Business Remodeling and Topher's Tree Trimming. They saw our post asking for help hauling the old rock out of the beds at the station β€” took care of it, then came back and installed all the new fabric, edging, and mulch without us even asking. We bought the materials; they donated all the labor and equipment. Site was spotless when they left.
Within two weeks of that post, the entire project was finished β€” and they came out our way to do right by a fire department that isn't even their own. That says everything.

If you've got a project coming up, they're worth the call:
Monkey Business Remodeling β€” (320) 433-4142
Topher's Tree Trimming β€” (320) 241-5327
Swing by and check out the station's new look!
