Duane Rossi: The Cowboy Poet

The Junior class recently invited local cowboy poet and lifelong resident, Duane Rossi, into the digital design studio to capture him reading his poetry and talking about growing up in Big Pine. Students were able to record Duane reciting some of his poems from his most well known book of poetry, The Monache Rodeo, including the eponymous poem the book is named after. Duane’s daughter, Mary Rossi, was on hand and together with her father, ended the recitation with a song and Mary reading a poem that she had written as a young girl. Students then had the opportunity to interview Duane about what it was like to grow up in Big Pine and how he got started as a poet. They also got a chance to practice their photography skills by taking some portraits. The 11th graders have just finished a video featuring the poetry reading that is now available on the Big Pine School Youtube Channel (). This student produced performance was a combined effort between Mr. Steele’s history class and Mrs. Leist’s digital design class. The goal was to help document and preserve Duane’s legacy of poetry as an acclaimed local poet who spent his life in the Sierras as a cowboy, packer, trapper, and local legend.
