Vehicle Accident with Entrapment
Route 119 near Suburban Propane, Bell Township
The Engine Rescue and Rescue responded.
The initial dispatch was for a vehicle accident involving a vehicle over an embankment, partially submerged in water, with reported entrapment.
After receiving updated information from a Big Run firefighter on scene, it was confirmed that there was no entrapment. However, the vehicle was approximately 150โ200 yards off the roadway, partially in the water, with an occupant reportedly ejected from the vehicle. Captain 17 requested Station 30 be added to the box for additional assistance.
Upon Captain 17โs arrival, Stations 20 and 40 were added to the assignment to assist with the technical rope rescue operation.
EMS requested a medical helicopter for the patient. With Route 119 being shut down, Station 8 was requested to assist with traffic control and prevent tractor-trailers from continuing down Route 119 toward the incident.
Ladder 30 was also added to the assignment to provide an aerial anchor point for the rope rescue operation. Crews from Stations 17 30 and 40 worked together to cut and clear a path down the embankment to access the patient. Once Ladder 30 arrived, crews established the rope rescue system using the aerial ladder.
STAT MedEvac 6 arrived at the Punxsutawney Airport before the extrication was completed. The flight crew was transported from the airport to the scene to assist with patient care.
Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) was requested to the scene to provide absorbent booms and pigs to contain any hazardous fluids leaking from the vehicle.
Following the successful extrication of the patient, absorbent booms were placed around the vehicle to help contain any additional hazardous fluid leakage and prevent further contamination of the waterway.
