OPENING TODAY!

08/15/2026

Due to the Timber fire in Big Sur, we are relocating the Whitney concert from the Henry Miller Library to Folktale Winery in Carmel Valley. All tickets purchased for the Henry Miller Library will be honored at the new venue.

We remain eternally grateful to the local and visiting firefighters who are working around the clock to protect our Big Sur community, including the Henry Miller Library and surrounding homesteads. Our top priority is keeping everyone safe and keeping the highway accessible for emergency services during this difficult time.

Thank you for your understanding, and we look forward to seeing you on the beautiful grounds at Folktale Winery in Carmel Valley.

Travel writer, guidebook author, former Big Sur ranger, and old friend, Stuart Thornton, returns to Big Sur—at least in spirit—to reflect on a career spent encouraging people to visit the very places he sometimes wishes they would leave alone.

We talk about discovering California's coast, writing guidebooks, the challenge of over tourism, and whether AI will help travelers find deeper experiences or simply send more people to the same beautiful places. Along the way, Stuart shares stories from Big Sur, the road, and a lifetime of chasing the next hidden corner of the map.

A conversation I’ve been looking forward to for a long time. I sat down with Matti Friedman (I'm in Big Sur, Matti is in Jerusalem) to talk about OUT OF THE SKY as well as history, memory, journalism, Israel, and some currents shaping the world we are living at this time. Matti is beautiful, thoughtful and a very good person. He is also challenging in the best sense.

In this episode of A Big Sur Podcast, I speak with the writer and journalist Matti Friedman about his remarkable book Out of the Sky — a work that begins with four words from the Bible, “Out of the sky,” and unfolds into a meditation on fear, memo...
