Sweet Grass Ranch Welcome to Sweet Grass Ranch! The ranch encompasses both mountain and rolling foothill country where we raise Angus cattle and horses.

Nestled at the base of Montana’s picturesque Crazy Mountains, Sweet Grass Ranch is a sixth generation,
family-run guest ranch — as close to heaven as it gets! Nestled at the base of Montana’s picturesque Crazy Mountains, Sweet Grass Ranch is a sixth generation,
family-owned cattle operation and guest ranch. Timothy meadows and clear, sparkling creeks enable deer, antelope, elk, bear, mountain lions, coyotes, mountain goats and an occasional wolf to call this country home, as well as many smaller mammals, eagles, hawks and lots of songbirds. We are privileged to ride across several good neighbors; coupled with our own land, there are countless miles of riding available. Our guests are welcome to take an active a part as they like in all phases of ranch life from feeding pigs to moving cows and wrangling horses. To insure everyone an opportunity to really enjoy the ranch, we take a limited number of guests. Come enjoy our special life and experience the friendly charm of the Sweet Grass Ranch.

Week #10 marked the 2/3 point of our season, which is well represented in this first photo of the ponies 💛. Things always mellow out as we reach this time of year; the horses have relaxed into the routine of summer work, the crew is a well oiled machine, and days on the ranch follow a peaceful and predictable rhythm. During week 10, we welcomed back the McConnel family who initially came to us as guests at the Lazy K Bar, our family’s first dude ranch. It was special to be able to celebrate Margot’s birthday alongside Barbie’s, as they have done several times before in decades past. Also joining us on week 10, we had a lovely returning couple from Scotland — Andrew and Donna, who went on all day rides rain or shine (and were even welcomed to the Bar B by a stampede of retired horses emerging out of the mists!). John I and John III added lots of laughter and fun to the week, while Kirsten, Brett, Sarah, and Brian realized a newfound love of loping and fly fishing. A sweet couple named Pettia and Henry celebrated their honeymoon with us, and a mother and son, Vicky and Luca, joined us from England. Our final guest of the week, Kim, arrived a day late but made up for it with lots of epic rides on our dear Otter. Week #10 perfectly represented the variety of our guests, as we had people visiting from all across the world and with all differing levels of riding experience. We had something fun for everyone to do, and in turn they shared their own senses of joy and adventure to make the week memorable. It was a beautiful week with some bluebird afternoons and some misty mornings, as we moved through August and toward fall 🧡

Livin’ on cloud nine for our 9th week of the season! ❤️💯 I’m nothing if not biased, but this was one of my favorite weeks of the summer. On August 2nd, our 9th set of 2026 guests arrived at the ranch. On August 3rd, eight of them set out with me on what would become a 100 mile ride. Over the course of six days, we trekked most of the way to Miner’s Creek, loped across wide open plains to the Drivdahl, climbed high above Holman’s Lake, wended our way deep into the mountains following the snaking Sweet Grass all the way up the South Fork, swam in Glacier Lake at happy hour, camped beneath the stars, moved to the Middle Form and camped beside Campfire Lake, summited the mountain behind Hindu Lake, and, finally, made our way home to the ranch with a not-so-quick detour to upper and lower Sunlight Lakes. We rode 100 miles (roughly), spent 41 hours in the saddle, and climbed over 30,000 feet. We woke to frosty sleeping bags and purple mountain majesty, we ate like kings and queens at camp, we caught fish and made friends, and we had the kind of week most people only dream about. I can and will have more to say about the 100 mile ride soon, as we are already planning our repeat trip(s) next year. If you’re interested in the 100 mile ride, DM me! Spots are limited, and oh-so-worth it 🏔️💚. To my most perfect group of inaugural 100-milers — Henja, Ines, Sienna, Maria, Justin, Bill, Lynne, Lori, and John — thank you, thank you, thank you 💛💛. And now, let’s turn our attention to our other dear guests from week #9. The Agosti Family, Michelle and Neal, Stuart and Casey, and John held down the fort at the ranch. Some of them joined the 100-Milers for an overnight at the Bar B, and we all met up for a dinner ride to Kit’s Pond. Our regular guests did some remarkable rides, including an all day to the Green Gate and another to the Cottonwoods in Section 20. It was a week where confidence grew and newfound love of riding abounded. Smoke settled in the canyon, and blew out again miraculously. Double rainbows graced the skies and our horses graced us with their exceptional stamina, patience, and magic. Week #9, you’ll live on in our memories and hearts 🩵

Week #8 closed out the month of July at Sweet Grass! It was a busy week filled with guests old and new. The days were clear and beautiful, the guests were fun and adventurous, and the horses and crew were at the top of their game. Connor and I were gone visiting our other grandparents, so our pal and wrangler extraordinaire Hudson Davis came to run the corrals for us for the week. We appreciate being able to step away for a few days during our busy season, and are so grateful to our awesome team for keeping things running smoothly all the time! Guests enjoyed all the best things Sweet Grass has to offer, including a long ride up the canyon to Campfire Lake, a periwinkle sky on a sunrise ride, an orange sunset and delicious food on a dinner ride, and all kinds of good rides and good laughs. Our long time friends Val, Randy, Cathy, and Jerry returned for six days of riding ponies, rocking on the front porch swing, and visiting with Bill and Shelly. To our delight, Val has recently published a children’s book inspired by her years at Sweet Grass! She was able to show a copy of “Gabe and Griz” to our family, and we are happy to now carry it in our little shop at the ranch. You can also find the charming story on Amazon, if you have any kiddos in your life in need of a good pony story. It is so special for us to see the ways in which Sweet Grass has touched the hearts and lives of so many people, and we love that Val’s book helps to extend the legacy of love, family, and horses for the next generation.

We are incredibly fortunate at Sweet Grass to have many guests who return year after year. Few are as dedicated, though, as the Sip-A-Dickel group. Thirty some years ago, this crew of guests was here for the first time. One evening, they decided to have a wh***ey tasting. Everyone ranked each dose, and after a long night of hard scientific study, they determined that Dickel was the best wh***ey on the table. Henceforth, they were christened the Sip-A-Dickel group. For decades, the third week in July has been host to some of our favorite people. Although not all the Sip-A-Dickelers can make it every year anymore, we are still lucky to have many of them. This year, Linda, Mary, Jack and Barbara, Aileen and Barb, Boo, the Foote family, and Nick and Irene all spent the week with us. In addition to our dear Dicklers, we also had Lynne and her sweet family for a returning visit. We rounded out the week with a charming British family of three, and a weekend visit from our old friend Karin and her daughter Roan. It was a full week with many friends old and new. We celebrated Bill and Shelly’s 63rd wedding anniversary, we kept working on the trail up canyon, the sunrise ride was cold and colorful, Shelly took up a new hobby of water color painting, and the rides took us through fields of blooming asters and misty creek bottoms. The old adage goes that the people make the place. Sweet Grass is a pretty special place all on its own, but people like the guests during our 7th week this summer are part of what makes it truly magical💛🩷🧡❤️

Week 6, week 6, week 6!! On July 12th, we welcomed an epic set of guests: the sweet Staves who lent us our pal Wil Stave for two weeks, the Yates family who we were delighted to see again, the Pedries who are working on establishing themselves as Sweet Grass long-timers, Laurie and Vicki - two ladies we hadn’t seen in too long, Kassidy, daughter of our old friend Brioney, and a whole bunch of newcomers who quickly established themselves in our hearts — Holly, Cat, Grant, Stephanie, Pepper, Skye, Brian, Allison, Asela, and Eloise 💞💞. It was a beautiful week, complete with foggy mornings, bluebird afternoons, bear sightings, dawn wrangling on 30 year old Minnie, veryyy sleepy ponies in the corrals, very speedy ba****ck barrel bending (try saying that 3 times fast) from Mark, and a 15th birthday celebration for our handy boy and next generation Carroccia Sweet Grass employee, Julian. After the most intense blow down we’ve ever seen, it took us a long time to get up canyon but we finally made it in mid-July! There were still snowdrifts in the high country and the views were unparalleled. The company was excellent, the cheer was overflowing, and week 6 was one for the books 🏔️🩵.

Remembering week #5! Mid-July had allllll the best Sweet Grass things, including but not limited to: cotton candy sunsets, radiant orange sunrises, double rainbows, hammocks upon hammocks, an epic lightning show, an epic musical show courtesy of our dear friend John King , puppy pets, pony baths, flatbed dancing, a disco ball in the corrals, our new fjord Marc being a major menace and terrorizing the saddleshed (but it’s okay cuz he’s the cutest thing ever), the wranglers putting on their handywomen hats and building some new saddle stands, and another wonderful group of guests. Our old friends Bruce and Amy spent the week with us, working on projects and sprucing the place up with their usual devotion. Our new friends, the Ashe family, were up for anything, even a hike up canyon to clear trail. The Rodriguezes put up our teepee for us one morning, and basked on the banks of the creek with a herd of dogs in the afternoon. Four ladies who came separately became besties (hi, Layla, Karen, Nina, and Noel!). The kids and adults alike gave the games their all, burning and turning around barrels and balancing eggs and spoons with precision. It was another beautiful week in the best place on earth 🧡

Hard to believe it’s been four weeks since week #4! This year, our 4th week of the season ran from June 28th to July 4th and included lots of fun 4th of July activities! 🎇🇺🇸🦅❤️ We were joined by many friends, old and new, including 8 fantastic and spunky Australian ladies (heyyyy spursnslurs 🥂), our dearly beloved Kenyon / Burns clan who visited us from England to celebrate our independence 😉, the DeVorsses, the Goldzter-Whites, the Ottos, Sharon, Jamie and Declan, Al and Piper, Linda, Jen and Kim and their girls, and the Sweet Grass-famous Rodriguez brothers, Corey and Chris and their family! This was one of our fullest weeks in Sweet Grass history, and each of our guests added something special and fun to the dynamic. We loped across green fields, we cheersed at the campfire, we floated on the Beaver Ponds, and we set off a flurry of fireworks. The Indian Paintbrush and Brown-Eyed Susans were a riot of color, only to be outdone by the sudden arrival of the Northern Lights in waves of pink, green, and star-streaked purple. Chefs Amy and Andrew replicated their much loved American Flag cake from last summer, to the joy and delight of many tummies. Our horses were spoiled, hand fed a little Coors by Wynne and a lot of grass by Juliet. We moved the retirees over to the Bar B to enjoy a summer of much deserved rest and relaxation. Week #4 was another beautiful one at Sweet Grass, full of great people, great ponies, and a great kick off to our busiest month of the season ❤️🤍💙

Flashback to week #3! No offense to the rest of the summer, but late June is one of the best times to be at Sweet Grass. We are officially in full swing, the horses and staff have settled in to the routine, the days are long, the wildflowers are blooming, and the canyon is lush with the green green grass of home. Our third week of this summer was full of beautiful moments, from drizzly afternoon rides through the horse pasture to sunny dinner rides to Kit’s Pond, from very sleepy ponies resting in the corrals to happy doggos playing under the bridge. We were lucky enough to host a wonderful crew of guests, including our cover star Mr. Ed who spent his mornings riding our angel of a horse, Goose, and his afternoons on the shores of the Sweet Grass under the expert guidance of our fly fisherwomen extraordinaries, Hayden and Lindsey. We visited the Big Timber rodeo, swung around the street dance, and then returned to the ranch for the weekend to double fist lemonade and relax on front porches. Someone mentioned to me yesterday that I’m a bit delayed on my posts, to which I responded…you don’t say 😉! But I’m doing my best to get caught up so we can post in real time for the rest of the summer ❤️Check back in soon for our week #4 recap 🤠

Recapping Week #2! On June 14th, we welcomed our second set of guests for the 2026 season. After our opening week of Brazilians, we returned to our regularly scheduled programming of families enjoying their summer vacation. We had visitors from all over the U.S. and beyond, including one family who have been in the States for years and are now returning to Australia after a very sweet Sweet Grass send off. It was a week full of ba****ck rides, kids rides, dinner rides, goat toating, bridge jumping, and boot stomping. After a cool start to the season, the days were finally warm enough for creek swims for people and ponies alike. Our evenings featured sing-a-longs in the pavilion, led by the oh-so-talented Reston (with a little help from Tony and her dad, Turner). It was a wonderful group of guests to jump into our regular season with! And jump we did! After guests left on Saturday morning, we quickly turned the ranch around and set up for a wedding Saturday evening. Despite a rainy start to the night, the event was a great success thanks to good food, good people, an ice cream bar, an open bar, and a stunning rainbow that came out at just the right time to usher the newlyweds into their happy next chapter 🌈 🐎 💚🍦💐
