Did you know there was a tradition where voters would receive a cake for voting? The cake, simply called election cake, was a yeast bread mixed with a light fruit cake with raisins or prunes, topped with a brandy or wh***ey icing. These were baked to have a longer shelf life as voting was not as easily accessible as it is today and men would come from miles around to vote.
Before women were given the right to vote, they would bake cakes to incentivize voters to vote for certain candidates. This was one way for them to have a place in politics without voting. The first printed recipe was in 1796 in the first U.S. cookbook by Amelia Simmons’ American Cookery.
General Election is November 3rd.
