The Monday Mansion Tour!
One of the oldest surviving decorative features in Kilmer Mansion is hiding in plain sight…
The dining room’s original tooled elephant hide wall-covering, dating back to 1898.
During the Gilded Age, embossed and “tooled” leather wall treatments were considered a symbol of luxury and sophistication, inspired by grand European estates and manor houses. Rich textures, dramatic patterns, and dark dining rooms helped create an atmosphere designed to impress dinner guests of the era.
More than 125 years later, this remarkable detail still remains inside the mansion.
Its worn edges, faded colors, and aged texture tell a story all their own - a reminder that history isn’t always perfectly preserved, but beautifully lived in.
👉Want to see details like this in person? Join us for a docent-guided tour on June 7th or 20th of Kilmer Mansion - experience the craftsmanship and history hidden throughout the home.

👀The Monday Mansion Tour
Before guests ever stepped inside the Kilmer Mansion, they were greeted by something unexpected…
A bronze gargoyle light fixture standing guard at the entrance.
But few people know there were actually three figures in the original set...
These striking fixtures decorated the front doors of the mansion for decades and became one of its most recognizable features. In 1996, two of the bronze gargoyles were stolen from the property and were never recovered.
The third surviving piece - a freestanding bronze gargoyle weighing nearly 100 pounds, can now be found inside the museum at Kilmer Mansion. Complete with dragon wings and a globe light, it remains a fascinating reminder of the mansion’s remarkable history.
It’s details like these that make Kilmer Mansion so special… every corner has a story.

As the excitement of the Kentucky Derby fills the air today, we’re celebrating Binghamton’s own champion 🐎
In 1918, Exterminator, owned by Willis Sharpe Kilmer, stunned the racing world with a Derby win at 30–1 odds…earning a place in history as one of the sport’s most beloved underdogs.
Right here in Binghamton, the Kilmer family’s legacy lives on at Kilmer Mansion - a reminder of the city’s unexpected connection to one of racing’s greatest stories.
We loved recently gathering with our community to watch Old Bones and celebrate this incredible legacy. Thank you to everyone who joined us!
Here’s to honoring the past! Who are you cheering on in today’s race!? 🏇
