Although it may not feel like it at the moment, spring is coming, which means the annual NYS Burn Ban will be in effect. See the attached picture from the DEC for more information.

Tonight your Port Dickinson firefighters spent the evening shoveling out all the village hydrants to make them accessible in the case of a fire. It was welcoming to drive the village and find over half of the hydrants were already shoveled and cleared, ready to use. A HUGE thank you goes out to the village residents for doing their part in clearing the hydrants by their houses!

Although there are several things wrong with this video, we cannot emphasize enough the importance of a closed door. Despite everything else, closing that apartment door would have allowed everyone to evacuate the building safely. A closed door will always slow a fire!

It is also never a bad time to remind everyone to make sure that they not only have enough smoke and CO detectors but that they are in date and working! Smoke detectors save lives!

This morning at 2:07AM we were dispatched along with station 55 and Rescue 39 for a tractor trailer rollover on I88 West at the I81 connector bridge. We responded all 3 of our apparatus with initial report had unknown injures and stated the trailer was hanging off the bridge. The driver was able to self-extricate and was transported for evaluation. The trailer was determined to be empty. Station 66 was requested to close down the East bound side of the bridge. Thanks to Broome County Sheriff's Office, Broome County Office of Emergency Services, Hillcrest Fire Company, Inc., Chenango-Bridge Fire-Company, Broome Volunteer Emergency Squad Inc., and Chenango Fire Company Inc. for their assistance.

Over the past 2 days roughly 400 kids pre-k through 2nd grade from Port Dickinson Elementary School passed through the fire station for their annual fire prevention education. The kids watched a brief video on being "cool about fire safety," followed by some education and demonstration of equipment by the chief, and then ended up in the truck bay where they got to see the "Chenango Valley" red and grey warrior fire truck, learning about the apparatus as well. As the students left they were given some fire prevention swag to take home with them. These little warriors certainly seemed to enjoy their visit and hopefully left a little more educated on fire safety than when they arrived.
