Today, OPP staff delivered naloxboxes to Christ Episcopal Church.

These boxes contain free naloxone overdose reversal kits that are readily accessible for community members to take.

This morning, representatives from the Broome County Health Department brought us two Naloxboxes as part of their Overdose Prevention Program.

Each container holds pouches of Narcan, a face mask, and gloves for anyone who might need emergency assistance. They are located by the entrance to Katie’s Clothing Closet and at the foot of the ramp heading into the Historic Church.

On Saturday, April 25, 2026 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, the Broome County Sheriff’s Office and the Broome County Health Department will be partnering to bring the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)’s Nationwide prescription Drug “Take Back” Initiative.



Broome County residents are encouraged to turn in their expired and unused prescription medications for proper disposal at one of six locations around the community.

Residents are asked to keep the medications in their original container with the label intact; however, they may blacken out their name if they wish. All medications, ointments and sprays will be accepted.



Sharps will NOT be accepted at these locations as part of DEA Take Back Day. For a full list of locations to safely dispose of sharps, click here:

We have received reports in the last 24 hours of increased suspected fatal and non overdoses.

If you’re using drugs once in a while or if you’re someone who uses drugs daily we encourage you to practice harm reduction measures: never use alone, go slowly, use fentanyl and xylazine test strips, learn about the importance of rescue breaths, have a naloxone kit available and if you are on the scene of an overdose call 911. Narcan is available at multiple organizations in Broome County. There’s also a Never Use Alone hotline: simply call 1-877-696-1996 to speak with a live person, judgement free.

We want to remind community members of the impacts of xylazine and medetomidine on opioid overdoses; these non-opioid substances are often added to drugs such as co***ne, he**in, methamphetamines, counterfeit pills and fentanyl to enhance drug effects or increase street value. If an overdose occurs and someone was suspected to have used one of these substances, rescue breaths are especially important.

If someone is experiencing an overdose, it’s important to call 9-1-1, administer naloxone, and provide rescue breaths.

Both fentanyl and xylazine test strips are also available in the community. If you or someone you love need harm reduction resources like a naloxone kit, xylazine and/or fentanyl test strips, you can call 211 for information on where to get them. That number is available 24 hours a day.

The Southern Tier AIDS Program (STAP) offers drug checking services at its 275-277 Main Street location in Johnson City. This service allows you to receive on the spot lab quality analysis that will tell you exactly what substances are in the sample presented and at what strengths. Today we remember those we lost to substance use disorders and substance use related causes.

Black Balloon Day was established in 2015 in memory of Greg Tremblay who died of an overdose March 6, 2015. Today is about bringing families, communities and organizations together to honor those affected by substances.

The Department of Health (DOH) is offering FREE HIV self-test kits to priority populations, including LGBTQ+ individuals, cisgender Black women, and cisgender Latinos. This initiative helps remove barriers for people who may not be able to access traditional, in-person testing. The giveaway ends March 24, 2026.
