Campaign for New York Health The Campaign for New York Health is dedicated to passing and implementing universal, single-payer health care in New York State. We can do better.

The New York Health Act would make health care a guaranteed right for all New Yorkers, not something that is available to those who can afford it. Today, New Yorkers of all stripes face the challenges of the skyrocketing cost of health care and increasingly narrow networks that prevent them from seeing the hospitals and doctors of their choice. Health care workers are frustrated with the bureaucracy of private insurance companies. Over 1.6 million New Yorkers will remain uninsured even after the Affordable Care Act is fully implemented. We waste millions in tax payer dollars subsidizing wasteful, for-profit health insurance bureaucracy that is not transparent or accountable to New Yorkers. By passing the New York Health bill, all New Yorkers will have:

• Freedom to choose your health care providers. There would be no network restrictions. Only patients and their doctors – not insurance companies – would make health care decisions.

• Comprehensive coverage. All New Yorkers would be covered for all medically necessary services, including: primary, preventive, specialists, hospital, mental health, reproductive health care, dental, vision, prescription drug, and medical supply costs – more comprehensive than commercial health plans.

• No fear of going bankrupt due to medical bills. Today, insurance companies set the same high premiums, deductibles, and co-pays, whether it’s for a CEO or a receptionist, and a big successful company actually pays less than a small new business. Under New York Health, individuals and employers would not pay premiums, deductibles and co-pays. Instead, coverage would be funded through a graduated tax on payroll and non-payroll taxable income, based on ability to pay. For most people, it will be a substantial reduction in what they now spend. Most people’s take-home pay will go up.

* Less administrative waste, better care, more accountability. The total cost would be tens of billions less than what we now spend, because we wouldn’t be paying for huge insurance company administrative costs and profits or for the time and paperwork of dealing with insurance companies. Health coverage would be accountable to the people of New York, not to insurance company stockholders.

• Guaranteed health care that is not tied to employment. It reduces costs for employers – large and small – by taking them out of the business of buying health coverage. That would make New York dramatically more job-friendly, especially for small businesses, start-ups, low-margin businesses, local governments and taxpayers, and non-profits. We need your help to make it happen. Please join us today.

NYSNA Director at Large Sonia Lawrence, BSN, RN, spoke at the NY Health Act Rally in the Bronx on Saturday, alongside Hon. Gustavo Rivera, Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, physicians, medical students, community members and more. The NY Health Act would bring a single-payer, Medicare for All system to our state, guaranteeing healthcare for every New Yorker. Advocates held several rallies across the state over the weekend to demand healthcare for all.

Healthcare is a human right.

Back in June Campaign for New York Health endorsed me as a “New York Health Act Healthcare Champion”. In Albany, that’s exactly what I’ll be. Passing the New York Health Act will be a top priority of mine.

Thanks so much to Sage for sharing her story at our healthcare town in Rosendale. Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and struck with what can only be explained as bad luck, her illness means being excluded not only from getting the care she needs but also from social norms such as marrying her partner or making more than $2,000 in income. Under the New York Health Act, the single-payer system would give someone like Sage full access to care without co-pays, premiums, and deductibles, with full choice of doctors without network restrictions, and without her having to limit herself on other aspects of her life as the conditions to get care.

Our town halls continue in New Paltz and Saugerties this week! Join us: https://bit.ly/health-103
