Polar plunge today broome county corrections employees union local 2012 donated to a great cause. Employee Sean Pomeroy matched the unions donation out of the kindness of his own heart. It is great to be able to support such a great cause and help the people of our community.

Several of our friends and family here at Broome County Corrections have taken the initiative to support NYS corrections officers. Over the last several days Broome County Corrections has taken supplies to Elmira, Auburn, Mohawk, Midstate, Marcy prisons in a show of support for the NYS Corrections officers. The men and women of NYS Corrections are fighting a fight that is not only for them but for all corrections officers across New York State.

K9 Marley and her partner, Corrections Investigator Brian Doyle have done a great job the past few months not only locating contraband, but also deterring attempts to introduce it to the Facility.

"Every effort that we can make to ensure that contraband is not being brought into the facility. We're going to do that. And one of the tools that we have is Brian and Marley. And as the Sheriff, I just couldn't be happier,” said Sheriff Fred Akshar.

(TOWN OF DICKINSON) A corrections investigation led to a felony contraband charge after a “shank” was uncovered at the Broome County Sheriff’s Correctional Facility

Investigators from the Corrections Investigation Unit (CIU) of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office received information on a “shank,” a homemade dangerous instrument, located in one of the housing units at the Broome County Correctional Facility.

On Friday, February 2, 2024, Corrections Investigators and Zone Rover Corrections Officers initiated a search of several cells within the housing unit. One of the cells searched was that of Alixander Lavelle, age 19, who is currently incarcerated on a felony burglary charge.

Investigators were able to successfully locate and secure a solid, sharpened piece of plastic from under the mattress in Lavelle’s cell. The sharpened plastic was taken from the arm of a pair of eyeglasses.

Lavelle was charged with Promoting Prison Contraband in the 1st Degree, a Class D Felony.

Lavelle was processed at the Broome County Correctional Facility and will answer for his charges at the Town of Dickinson Court on a future date.

“Another great job by our Corrections Investigations Team as well as our roving Corrections Officers for recovering an item that could easily be used as a weapon,” said Sheriff Fred Akshar. “I’m incredibly proud of our entire team for working together through a potentially dangerous situation during this recovery. The health, safety and security for all who live and work in the Correctional Facility remains our priority, and our investigations demonstrate time and again that they are up to the challenge and required vigilance to keep our population safe.”
