Welcome to the Broome County Family Violence Prevention Council

06/01/2026

June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the mistreatment, neglect, and exploitation of older adults. Every senior deserves to live with dignity, respect, and security, yet millions of older adults worldwide experience physical, emotional, financial, or verbal abuse each year.

Elder abuse often goes unnoticed because many victims are afraid to speak out or may depend on their abusers for care. By increasing awareness, we can help recognize the warning signs, support victims, and prevent abuse before it occurs.

During Elder Abuse Awareness Month, communities, organizations, caregivers, and family members are encouraged to educate themselves about elder abuse and take action to protect vulnerable seniors. Simple acts such as checking in on elderly loved ones, listening to their concerns, and reporting suspected abuse can make a significant difference.

Let us work together to ensure that every older adult is treated with the compassion, respect, and care they deserve. Protecting our seniors is not just a responsibility—it is a reflection of the values we share as a community. Please consider joining us in attendance at the Broome County Office for Aging's World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Expo. The Family Violence Prevention Council's Empowered Aging Committee is proud to be tabling at this event. Please see the information below and the flyer for the event!
