Today marked a historic milestone for Birmingham and Alabama as leaders from across the nation gathered to celebrate the ribbon cutting and dedication of the U.S. Coast Guard’s newest training center on the former Birmingham-Southern College campus. The ceremony brought together an impressive delegation of federal, state and local leaders, including U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, U.S. Senators Katie Britt and Tommy Tuberville, U.S. Representatives Terri Sewell and Robert Aderholt, Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Kevin Lunday and other dignitaries.
A highlight of the event was a heartfelt speech from former Birmingham-Southern College President Daniel Coleman, who reflected on the campus’s legacy and its new chapter of service to the nation.
Today’s ceremony symbolized both the preservation of an iconic campus and the beginning of a new mission that will bring national visibility, jobs, economic activity and military investment to Birmingham for decades to come. The project represents a major economic development win for the region and a powerful example of what can be achieved through collaboration among federal, state and local partners.
