Volunteers are at the heart of our mission.

Through June 2026, 5,125 volunteers had already given 10,184 hours of their time to help fight hunger across central Alabama. From packing food boxes and sorting donations to supporting special projects, their work helps us serve more neighbors every day.

Now, in our new warehouse, volunteers have even more ways to make an impact through opportunities in our Clean Room, Community Garden, and expanded volunteer space.

Our first volunteer group in the new facility, Regions Bank, helped us start this chapter strong — with 25 team members packing 493 boxes in just two hours.

As we grow into our new home, one thing remains the same: volunteers are essential to providing food and hope to neighbors facing hunger.

We’re just getting started, but we’re excited to provide fresh produce from our home in Bessemer to our neighbors across central Alabama.

During the school year, many children rely on school breakfasts and lunches. But hunger does not stop when the final bell rings — and it does not disappear when summer begins.

Across the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama’s 12-county service area, 20.5% of children face food insecurity. In Talladega County, that number rises to 26.4% — more than one in four children.

That is why we work alongside schools and community partners to help close the gaps through programs like Family Markets, School Pantries, and Sunny Bites.

These programs meet children and families where they already are — in trusted schools and community spaces — and help provide access to shelf-stable food, fresh produce, fruit, frozen protein, and kid-friendly snacks.

Partners like Cristo Rey Birmingham make this work possible by connecting families with food in a familiar setting and helping build relationships rooted in care and trust.

Childhood hunger cannot be solved by a single organization. But when schools, community partners, donors, volunteers, and the Community Food Bank work together, we can help children across central Alabama have the support and nourishment they need to thrive.

A little friendly competition can make a big impact.

Recently, Samford University and UAB turned their food drive into a Canstruction challenge, using donated items to build creative structures while competing to see who could collect the most food.

It was fun, creative, and meaningful — and every donated item will help provide food for neighbors facing hunger across central Alabama.

Food drives don’t have to be complicated. Add a theme, create teams, set a goal, and make it a competition. It’s a simple way to bring people together and make giving back even more engaging.

The strength of the Feeding America network lies in the ability of food banks to come together quickly to support one another and the communities we serve.

On Monday, the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama sent 50,000 meals to support our neighbors in south Alabama following Hurricane Isaias.

Now, we’re asking our community to help us continue that response. We will be accepting donations of:
• Shelf-stable meals
• Non-perishable, ready-to-eat meals
• Bottled water

Donations can be dropped off at Dock 1 from 8 am to 3 pm. Our address is 4336 Turin Drive, Bessemer, AL 35020. Items collected will be delivered to our partners in south Alabama.

This is what a strong network looks like — Alabama food banks, donors, and communities working together to make sure our neighbors have what they need in the days ahead.

In observance of Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples’ Day, the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama offices will be closed on Monday, October 12.

We will reopen and resume normal operations on Tuesday, October 13.
