Rocky Ridge Fire District
Week in Review: October 10 – October 16, 2026

This week, Rocky Ridge Fire District responded to 61 alarms.

Our 2026 Recruit School focused on Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) operations.

On-duty members from the Over-the-Mountain Regional Training Center (OTM-RTC) departments, including Rocky Ridge, Mountain Brook, Vestavia Hills, Hoover, Irondale, and Homewood, came together for three days of intensive EMS training. Dr. Duerring, Dr. Humphries, Dr. Payne, BREMSS Director Michael Minor, and several other instructors led participants through multiple training sessions. This year's emphasis was on Mass Casualty Incidents (MCI), providing valuable opportunities for our departments to learn together and strengthen the working relationships we depend on every day, especially during large-scale emergencies.

Lieutenant McCullough attended annual training on EPR FireWorks, our department's Records Management System. Chief Wright and Chief Currie attended maintenance update classes at Excellance, focusing on the maintenance and servicing of our ambulance fleet. Chief Bartlett represented RRFD at the annual BREMSS Awards Banquet.

Between emergency responses and training activities, our crews continued the essential behind-the-scenes work of inspecting, exercising, and maintaining our apparatus and equipment. These daily efforts help ensure our resources remain dependable and ready whenever our community needs us.

We hope everyone has a safe and wonderful weekend!

Week in Review: October 3 – October 9, 2026

This week, Rocky Ridge Fire District responded to 80 alarms.

Chief Bartlett and Chief Baker spent three days participating in the 2026 Alabama Mutual Aid System (AMAS) Annual Full-Scale Exercise (FSE). Approximately 175 members from Alabama’s various Task Force USAR teams came together for this year’s exercise. Chief Baker once again served as the Planning Exercise Director, while Chief Bartlett worked with CAFCA’s Chief Grilldaddy Cook Team, coordinating food logistics and preparing seven meals over three days for everyone participating. Both enjoy the opportunity each year to work alongside these outstanding teams and see firsthand what they accomplish.

This year provided a fitting reminder of exactly why this training matters. Almost immediately after the exercise concluded and teams returned home, Alabama Task Force 2 and Alabama Task Force 4 were activated and deployed to Mobile and Baldwin counties in preparation for Hurricane Isaias and its landfall.

Our 2026 Recruit School remains in full swing, with this week’s training focused on Hazardous Materials response. Fire Prevention Month is also underway, and our members are already busy visiting local schools and MDO programs, working with children and teaching important lessons about fire safety and prevention.

On-duty crews spent time with Children’s South staff reviewing MRI emergency procedures, an important annual training opportunity that helps both organizations remain prepared should an emergency occur in or around the MRI environment.

As Hurricane Isaias makes landfall and moves through our area, please remain weather wise, stay informed through trusted weather sources, and be prepared for changing conditions.

We hope everyone has a safe and wonderful weekend!

Rocky Ridge Fire District
Week in Review: September 26 – October 2, 2026

This week, Rocky Ridge Fire District responded to 72 alarms.

We finished up our preventative maintenance on our small engines, including an oil change and service on SU132, our Polaris.

This was Consumption Week for the 2026 Recruit School—traditionally one of the toughest weeks of the program. Everything the recruits have learned begins to come together through a series of challenging, repetitive drills designed to test their skills, endurance, and teamwork.

Dr. Duerring, our Medical Director, conducted EMS training with our crews. We also kicked off Fire Prevention Month by beginning our visits to local schools and MDO programs. Our members will continue visiting with children throughout October, teaching the importance of fire prevention and fire safety.

Another milestone was reached at our drill field apparatus bay project, with the overhead doors now installed. Chief Lord and Chief Bartlett attended the quarterly St. Vincent’s Safety Meeting and also represented RRFD at the Shelby County Chamber Awards Ceremony.

A big thank you to Carrabba’s for providing lunch for our crews today! Between calls, training, and other activities, our members continued the important work of keeping our apparatus and equipment maintained, checked, and ready for the next emergency.

We hope everyone has a safe and wonderful weekend!

Rare catch of Squad 133. While multiple units were tied up on a woods fire and medical run, Squad 133 was dispatched to a pine straw fire against a church building. Thanks to the passersby that saw the small fire starting to catch the siding of the building on fire and called this in.

Week in Review: September 19 – September 25, 2026

This week, Rocky Ridge Fire District responded to 65 alarms.

Chief Wright and our members spent time performing preventative maintenance on all of our small engines, helping keep this important equipment dependable and working.

The 2026 Recruit School focused on fire streams, hose operations, and ladder work, along with bringing together many of the skills the recruits have learned over the past several weeks. It is great to see everything beginning to come together as they continue progressing through the program.

Station 2 hosted CPAT certification testing for several candidates. Our apparatus bay project at the drill field also continues to move forward, with the overhead bay doors being installed this week.

Members stayed busy checking, exercising, and maintaining our apparatus and equipment. Special attention was given to our boats, Polaris, and specialized equipment, ensuring these less frequently used but important resources are ready when called upon.

We hope everyone has a safe and wonderful weekend!

Week in Review: September 12 – September 18, 2026

This week, Rocky Ridge Fire District responded to 66 alarms.

The 2026 Recruit School focused on Ladders, Ventilation, and Rescue. After hours, several recruits put in some extra time at the station working with our members to sharpen their ladder skills.

Chief Lord, Chief Bartlett, and Chief Loux attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly completed improvements at the combined Mountain Brook/Vestavia Hills drill facility. These improvements are a great addition not only for the two cities, but also for the overall training capabilities of the Over-the-Mountain Regional Training Center (OTM-RTC).

Our apparatus bay project at the drill field continues to take shape. With the concrete work complete and the interior walls now in place, we look forward to the overhead doors being installed next week.

Chief Bartlett attended the quarterly Medical Direction and Accountability Committee (MDAC) meeting at the Birmingham Regional EMS System (BREMSS). Dr. Duerring, our Medical Director, also conducted EMS case reviews and training with our crews at Rocky Ridge.

Behind the scenes, members continued the routine but important work of checking, exercising, and maintaining our apparatus and equipment so everything is ready when the next emergency arises.

We hope everyone has a safe and wonderful weekend!

Rocky Ridge Fire District
Week in Review: September 5 – September 11, 2026

This week, Rocky Ridge Fire District responded to 74 alarms.

The 2026 Recruit School focused on Fire Behavior, Ropes, Forcible Entry, and Ladders. Temperatures remained extreme, but the recruits continued to push through the heat and demands of their training.

Over three days, members from all shifts and stations toured our newest 200+ unit apartment complex, which features a unique design and layout. Touring the property during the construction phase gave our crews an opportunity to become familiar with the building layout, sprinkler system, construction features, and access considerations before the complex is occupied.

On Thursday, Chief Bartlett attended the Shelby County Fire and EMS Association meeting—and even came home as the winner of the TV door prize!

On Friday, RRFD held our annual September 11 remembrance ceremonies at Station 1. We thank Pastor Boutwell of Lakeside Church for joining us and offering a prayer for our crews as we paused to remember those who lost their lives 25 years ago.

A special thank you also goes to Mrs. Gachet, who continued her annual tradition of providing steaks for our members. Also, thanks to Publix and Sold South Realty for the food they dropped off at Station 2.

We will never forget.

We hope everyone has a safe and wonderful weekend!

25 YEARS LATER — WE WILL NEVER FORGET

Twenty-five years ago today, our nation experienced a tragedy that forever changed America—and forever changed the fire service.

Many of the men and women serving in the fire service today were either children or had not yet been born when the attacks of September 11, 2001, occurred. For others, the memories of that day remain as vivid today as they were 25 years ago.

As we reflect on this anniversary, we looked back through some of our own history.

These photographs offer a glimpse back at some of our members who were already serving in the fire service when 9/11 occurred—young firefighters who could not have known where the next quarter-century of service would take them.

Twenty-five years later, these men have dedicated their careers to protecting and serving the people of Rocky Ridge and our surrounding communities. Along the way, they have helped train, mentor, and lead generations of firefighters who came after them.

September 11 holds a special meaning within the fire service. On that morning, firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel, and other first responders went to work expecting an ordinary day. When the unimaginable happened, they answered the call.

343 FDNY firefighters never returned home.

Their sacrifice remains a reminder to every firefighter of the responsibility that comes with wearing the uniform and answering the call—regardless of what may be waiting on the other side of the station doors.

Today, we remember those who were lost. We honor those who answered. We remember those who later died from illnesses associated with their service at Ground Zero. And we remain grateful for those who have continued to carry forward the tradition of service in communities across our nation.

For some, September 11 is history they have learned.
For others, it is a day they will never forget.
For the fire service, it is a legacy we have a responsibility to carry forward.

25 years later, we remember.
25 years later, we honor.
25 years later, we will never forget.
