They are silent. They should not have to be.

This past week, the Silent Witness stood in our lobby. Each red silhouette represented a life lost to domestic violence in our community over the past two years.

The circumstances differ. The outcome doesn't: devastating loss that reaches the victims, the abusers, their families, and all of us.

Next week, the story shifts from remembrance to voice. The Clothesline Project is coming, and those who have been touched by violence will speak through the shirts they've made.

As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, YWCA Central Alabama is bringing a powerful message of remembrance, hope, and awareness to communities across Blount County. Memorial candle displays will be placed at locations throughout the county in honor of those whose lives have been lost to domestic violence and to stand with survivors as we work toward a future free from violence. The displays will remain throughout Week Without Violence, October 19-23.

Today, we join millions around the world in mourning the loss of Dolly Parton, a beloved icon whose generosity, compassion, and unwavering belief in the power of education changed countless lives. Dolly passed away on August 25, 2026, at the age of 80, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy of music, philanthropy, and hope.

At YWCA Central Alabama, we are especially grateful for Dolly's vision through the Imagination Library, a program that has inspired a love of reading in children and families across our community. Through our partnership, thousands of young readers have received books that open doors to imagination, learning, and opportunity, reflecting Dolly's belief that every child deserves the chance to dream big. The Imagination Library has been one of Dolly Parton's most cherished philanthropic efforts.

As we honor her memory, we celebrate not only her remarkable achievements, but also the kindness and generosity that touched generations. Her legacy will live on in every child who discovers the joy of reading, every family strengthened through education, and every community made brighter by her example.

A heartfelt thank you to the BCBS of Alabama Executive Admins who volunteered with CREW (Creating Responsible Educated Working) Teens Student Enrichment. Our volunteers provided valuable professional development training focused on resume writing and interview skills and conducted mock interviews to help students build confidence and prepare for future opportunities.

We are deeply grateful for their time, expertise, and commitment to empowering our youth. Thank you to our volunteers and partners for your continued support of our mission and for investing in the success of the next generation. Together, we are helping young people gain the skills and confidence they need to thrive!
