Ruffner Mountain is a privately held 1,038 acre urban nature preserve in the heart of Birmingham, Al

Our story begins in 1977, when an intrepid grassroots community movement banded together to form the Ruffner Mountain Coalition in order to protect the mountain from a land developer planning to build an apartment complex on the site. We're honored to be featured in this Bham Now - Birmingham’s modern media article, which highlights the power of partnership and sensory-inclusive outdoor experiences.

It's been a privilege to partner with Glenwood Autism, whose students are helping to propagate plants for East Side Park, our new accessible nature park, which will feature 100% native plants.

Watching these students contribute to something that will grow and be enjoyed by the community for years to come has been very special, and we're so grateful to be part of it.

A special thank you to EBSCO Industries, Inc., for sponsoring the article and helping share the story behind this important work.

We're excited for what's ahead and appreciate everyone helping bring this vision to life. 💚

We had a fabulous time at the Fascinating Frogs Hike this past weekend. The group found multiple species of frogs, salamanders, moths, and more, including an American Bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus), an American Green Tree Frog (Hyla cinerea), and a Two-Lined Salamander (Eurycea bislineata). It was a fun night of hiking and learning!

Special thanks to Mountain High Outfitters for sponsoring the hike!

A big shout-out to the UAB Spain Rehabilitation Center’s Post-Rehab Transitions Program team for bringing to our attention the need for an additional handrail to help maneuver the incline to the accessible Ruffner Mountain Nature Center from the parking lot.

Jefferson County Greenways staff and volunteers did a great job incorporating it into the surrounding area, across from the Habitat Garden. We hope this helps make visiting the Nature Center, Habitat Garden, and the reconstructed treetop deck easier.
Come check it out!
