Did You Know: The first Memorial Day was organized by freed Black Americans in 1865 in Charleston, SC.

Over 10,000 newly freed men, women, and children gathered to honor Union soliders who fought and died for their freedom. They cleaned up burial grounds, held a parade, sang hymns, and gave thanks in what became the first large scale Memorial Day observance.

This powerful piece of Black History reminds us that freedom has always had defenders and the roots of Memorial Day are deeply tied to Black American history.

In honor of Small Business Week, join us on May 7 for the Youth Pitch Competition — featuring students from our BIG CAP program as they share bold ideas and business dreams.

This competition is about more than business — it’s about investing in our youth, amplifying their voices, and showing that success comes in many forms. Let’s celebrate creativity, courage, and the next generation of changemakers. 💡🙌
