Join us on Saturday, September 19, 2026, from 8:30 a.m. to noon, along local volunteers, including Caltrans and the Mono Lake Committee, at the eastern end of Lundy Lake (Lundy Dam Road) to help remove trash and improve water quality. This event is part of the Great Sierra River Cleanup 2026.

Last year, 40,000 volunteers removed nearly 400,000 pounds of trash statewide. We can make an even bigger difference this year.

The National Park Service is warning commercial truck drivers about the steep descent from Towne Pass through Death Valley National Park following another tractor-trailer fire. On Sept. 9, a tractor-trailer caught fire after its brakes overheated while descending roughly 5,000 feet from Towne Pass. The driver was able to detach the tractor from the trailer, helping prevent a potential spill of emulsified asphalt.

Park records show eight tractor-trailer fires on this section of SR-190 in the past three years.

NPS is reminding commercial drivers to maintain their vehicles, use appropriate braking techniques, understand the demands of the route, and consider an alternate route when necessary.

Pavement degrades due to many factors like weather, wear and tear, and traffic collisions. Caltrans constantly tests the pavement for stability. Core testing the roadway is essential. Our engineers test the core sample for failures. Core testing ensures longevity, verifies compliance, and prevents roadway failures, keeping the roads safe for the traveling public.
