Byron Knutson didn’t just believe in representative democracy—he lived it every single day of his life. Having known Byron for 50 years, I can tell you that politics was never about titles or talk for him; it was about people and action.
From marching alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to driving down miles of gravel roads to knock on farmhouse doors across North Dakota, Byron believed that every single voice mattered. He was a doer in the truest sense. Whether he was rolling up his sleeves to help set up an event, on the phone convincing you to become a Century Club member of the Democratic-NPL Party, or jumping into his vehicle to meet folks face-to-face in city neighborhoods and rural communities alike, his energy was boundless, and his passion was infectious. He was not only in the trenches of our democracy, but he also stepped up and gave of his talent as an elected official, helping craft public policy that could benefit all citizens.
North Dakota lost a champion of the people, and I lost a dear friend. Byron’s passion, relentless work ethic, and deep love for our democracy will be dearly missed, but his legacy lives on in every voice he helped empower. Let’s honor that legacy Thursday evening at the Bismarck Labor Temple. See you there!
