First up for : always check your local burn restrictions and current conditions! NDResponse houses this information in a handy, interactive map at https://NDResponse.gov/burn. This resource should be monitored daily, as fire danger and red flag warnings are updated daily, and most burn restrictions are tied to this information.

It's October! Is it sunflower harvest yet?

Every year we see fires pop during sunflower harvest. The exhaust temperatures are high enough to ignite that fine dust that's created when the stems are crushed. As you know, the dust builds up (everywhere). Stop periodically to clear dust with compressed air or a leaf blower.

Have a safe and happy harvest season 🌻

A busted pipe or a gas leak is a fast-moving emergency. You don’t want to be wandering around while your home fills up. Make sure you know your home’s gas and water shutoff valves and label them clearly.

Better to know it and not need it!

North Dakota's extreme weather can put pressure on our electrical systems. What's your plan for power outages? How will you maintain medical devices, cook, light, and heat your home? If you have a lifesaving medical device, will alternate power kick in automatically?

You probably (hopefully) have a fire extinguisher at your home, but when’s the last time you actually checked it? Does it have rust, dents, missing the pin, or low pressure? When was it last inspected on the inspection tag?

Dry chemical settles in fire extinguishers. It's recommended that they are checked once a year to make sure they're in good working order.

When you need it, you need it to work!

If you had five minutes to evacuate your home, what are you grabbing?

You're probably not thinking about important documents but they will prove to be a headache if you lose them in a fire or flood.

This isn’t a wedding invitation – it’s your challenge to take pictures of your most important documents like IDs, prescriptions, insurance, passports, and anything else you’d rather not lose in an emergency. Save them somewhere safe and protect them with a strong password! Because disasters don’t RSVP.

Keep fire extinguishers handy:
-in the cab
-from the ground
-in grain hauling equipment

And don't forget to tip the extinguisher upside down and shake. The vibrations from the equipment can cause content to settle on the bottom.
