NDSCS instructors say their training gives students a place to practice before entering the workforce and helps them understand how much teamwork goes into each prescription.

“It's seen as a very transactional process where they're going to the pharmacy and picking up their medications, but there's a team behind that's always working very diligently to get them the things that they need,” said Leif Mann, NDSCS pharmacy technician instructor.

Instructors at North Dakota State College of Science are preparing students for pharmacy technician jobs and the teamwork involved in filling prescriptions.

We had broad representation from our System Office, college presidents and members from the State Board of Higher Education at last week’s Lumina Foundation State Policy Retreat. The event, held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, provided opportunities to reflect on the State Attainment Collaborative, in which states adopt goals for ensuring people receive formal education or training that leads to further learning and good jobs. Attendees also highlighted their state’s progress and learned from partner states.

Andrea Pfennig – GNDC VP of Government Affairs joined Meredith Larson (NDUS), DJ Campbell (Sanford Health and SBHE Vice Chair), Dr. Carmen Simone (President, Lake Region State College), Lisa Johnson (NDUS), and Anna Kinney (UND and SBHE Staff Advisor) in Philadelphia at the Lumina Foundation State Policy Retreat.

This is an invitation-only event that gathers state leaders to collaborate on increasing postsecondary educational attainment. The event provided insights from across the country on opportunities to scale high-value workforce credentials, close the labor gap, and align college degrees with employer demands.

“Some of our schools have friendly rivalries,” Anderson said. “But I think the NDSA is a really unique place where the goal is that we put any differences or rivalries aside, and we say, ‘how do we work toward what would be beneficial for all of us?’ My goal is to just make it a good, productive place where people can come and advocate for issues that matter to them.”

The NDSA had its first meeting of the school year at UND. President Camryn Anderson said the organization is seeking legislative priorities from the North Dakota University System's 11 institutions.

North Dakota needs great teachers, and Mayville State is helping answer the call.

Through the Para-to-Teacher Pathway and Registered Apprenticeship Program for Teachers, paraprofessionals across the state are turning their passion for helping students into careers as licensed teachers, all while continuing to serve the schools and communities they know and love.

Since 2023, 86 paraprofessionals have chosen Mayville State to pursue education degrees through the Para-to-Teacher Pathway, with 20 graduates already entering the teaching profession and many more on their way. Combined with the university’s apprenticeship initiatives, these innovative programs are creating opportunities, strengthening rural communities, and helping address North Dakota’s teacher shortage one classroom at a time.

At Mayville State we’re proud to prepare educators who will inspire the next generation and make a lasting difference across North Dakota.
