Historic Smithfield A rare colonial mountain home with a story like no other. Come visit us! "Smithfield Plantation Road" is a different road and lies east of Highway 460.

Contrary to some auto navigator devices, Smithfield house is located east of Highway 460, at the end of that small snippet of north-south road visible on the map. Several of these devices show "Smithfield Plantation Road" as Bing does here, but the is actually "Plantation Road." Follow the signs on campus for better directions.

Two cozy, spooky-season evenings are happening at the Pavilion at Historic Smithfield this week, and there is still time to join us.

🧹 Broom Workshop with Gabriella the Garden Sage
Thursday, October 15, 6:00 to 7:30 pm
Craft your own broom from dried flowers, grasses, herbs, and seasonal botanicals. Feel free to bring dried plants of your own to work into your creation. Beverages will be provided.

👻 Grave Matters
Friday, October 16, 6:30 to 8:30 pm
An evening of Appalachian folklore and literary reading, with heavy hors d'oeuvres and hot beverages, including tomato soup with fresh bread from Our Daily Bread, a variety of sandwiches, a veggie platter, and of course, candy.

Both events are outdoors at the Pavilion, so dress warmly and consider bringing a blanket to cozy up under. Accessible bathrooms are available, and if you need any accommodations, please reach out to us ahead of time.

Join us a week from tomorrow to create a one-of-a-kind broom with Gabriella the Garden Sage!

A handmade broom was never meant to be disposable. Today's mountain broommakers still cut handles from tree branches in winter and let them cure for up to a year before shaping them. Some makers will even re-broom a piece that has already seen up to 30 years of use.

Make something with that same handmade spirit this Thursday, Oct 15, 6:00 to 7:30 PM. A few spots may still be open: https://www.historicsmithfield.org/classes/p/broom-workshop-with-gabriella-the-garden-sage

Calling all quilt lovers! Join us at Harvest & Haints at Historic Smithfield on Saturday, October 24, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a pop-up exhibit from the Textile Artists of Virginia (TAVA).

This talented group of quilters meets monthly to learn new techniques and push the boundaries of what a quilt can be. Their art quilts are wall hangings that showcase each artist's unique vision, using fabric and thread as their medium. On display will be pieces from two of the group's annual challenges, "Wild Things" and "Balance," along with additional work each artist chose to share.

While you're there, browse a small selection of items for sale, including hand-dyed silk scarves and handmade bags. Don't miss this chance to see incredible fiber art up close!

Thank you, Virginia Humanities ! 🎉

Historic Smithfield has received a $4,999 grant from Virginia Humanities for Voices of Smithfield: A Living History Initiative.

This funding will help us bring recent scholarship about the enslaved and indentured communities of Smithfield into our interpretation through new exhibit panels, display cases, and 4th grade lesson plans.

Stay tuned as the project moves forward, and watch for an exhibit reception to be announced at a later date!
