Last week, our Virginia Women in Agriculture WISE programs wrapped up with a special celebration of the Year of the Woman Farmer 📣 WISE programming provides an opportunity for Virginia farmers to network with one another and learn from our team of Extension agents in a positive and supportive setting. Attendees learned about cattle grading and veterinary care, and they got hands-on experience with techniques for low-stress cattle handling and proper medication administration.

Thank you to all attendees and agents for making this annual event a success!

Our 2nd annual 🌹 Cut Flower Field Day 🌹 brought together growers, gardeners, educators, and flower enthusiasts from across Virginia for a day of learning, networking, and inspiration at Deb's Daylilies in Randolph during the last week of September.

This event was organized by Virginia Cooperative Extension, Prince Edward County agent Erin Small and showcased a wide range of educational opportunities focused on Virginia's growing cut flower industry. Attendees connected with Extension specialists, agents, vendors, and industry experts to learn about cut flower production, integrated pest management, beneficial insects, floral design, dahlia breeding, cover cropping, and value-added products.

Thanks to the many Virginia Cooperative Extension agents, specialists, Extension Master Gardeners, 4-H representatives, volunteers, and community partners who contributed educational programming and provided support throughout the day. We look forward to continuing to support Virginia's flower growers across the Commonwealth. 🌻

We were honored to welcome Gov. Abigail Spanberger and Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry Katie Frazier to the State Fair of Virginia last week where we celebrated the people, programs and industries that make Virginia agriculture strong.

Fair visitors, including Gov. Spanberger and Secretary Frazier, had the opportunity to visit our booth, and the VT Virginia Seafood Agricultural Research and Extension Center, and VSU College of Agriculture booths, to learn about Virginia 4-H, as well as our nutrition education programs, the numerous ways we support Virginia agriculture and small businesses, and how we're working to steward Virginia's natural resources.

Under Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s Executive Order 21, carriers transporting hay in any part of Virginia can receive temporary over-width exemption waivers to facilitate the movement of essential agricultural supplies of hay.

The over-width waiver will go into effect on October 1, 2026 and will remain in force for 30 days.

The prolonged drought has resulted in a 35% statewide loss in hay yields, with losses reaching 70% in some areas, creating a significant hay shortage for livestock producers.

If you are a producer and you need help finding hay or talking through alternative herd management decisions, reach out to your local Virginia Cooperative Extension office.
