Invasive Plant Removal in Heritage Park Begins November 2

Beginning Monday, November 2, the Town of Blacksburg will complete work in Heritage Park to remove invasive plant species such as autumn olive, privet, multiflora rose, and Asiatic bittersweet. Using heavy forest mulching machinery to clear a 15-acre area, this project will allow space for regrowth and the restoration of the natural habitat with thousands of native plants. This work will only target non-native and invasive plants. The most visible work will be completed on the Meadowbrook Drive side of the park, but work will also occur on the Glade Road side of the park.

This project is expected to take an estimated 2 – 3 weeks; the forest machinery equipment will be active between the hours of 9am – 5pm.
Citizens using the park in these areas may experience elevated noise levels, see machinery being operated and may observe heavy equipment parked in or near the lot on the Glade Road side of Heritage Park, during the work period.

The overall project is being completed in collaboration with the New River Conservancy, the Virginia Environmental Endowment, and the Virginia Department of Forestry. This is phase 2 of a two-phase project.

Our most recent Mystery Dine Out trip took participants to The Mason Jar in Dublin.

Participant Bev stated, “The food was great & so was the service. As an added treat since we were just 5 minutes away from Claytor Lake we took a little side trip to the State Park. We just drove around the lake. It was a beautiful day & the lake was glittering from the sun. There is a submerged Appalachian Ghost town, Dunkard’s Bottom, at the bottom of the lake. This happened with the creation of Claytor Lake being built from 1937 to 1939. Also, the chimney from the Christian House aka the Christian-Cloyd House, home of Colonel William Christian who was Patrick Henry’s brother-in-law, was the only thing that was not completely submerged by the lake. It remained as a visible monument for many years then had an electric light added after it was hit by a park ranger’s boat. It was relocated in 1989 to a location in the park near the Howe House. This was not just an eating trip but an history trip as well.”

Our next Mystery Dine Out trip is already sold out! Check out our other programs at Blacksburg.gov/recreation.
