Our thoughts and prayers are with the Durham Fire Department during this difficult time.

We are heartbroken to share that Firefighter Andrew Brokes died in the line of duty this morning while searching for victims inside the building at 410 Marly Drive.

Firefighter Brokes, who joined the Durham Fire Department on May 5, 2025, served the Durham community with dedication, courage, and a deep commitment to the residents of the Bull City.

“This is a heartbreaking loss for our department, the family, and the entire community,” said Durham Fire Chief Robert J. Zoldos II. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones and his colleagues, and we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during this unimaginably difficult time. The department is standing with and supporting his family in every possible way.”

Two other firefighters were injured during the incident and were taken to Duke Medical Center. Both have received care and are expected to make full recoveries.

This loss is felt across our entire department. Firefighters step into unpredictable situations every day in service to others, and Firefighter Brokes embodied that calling with honor.

We know our community is grieving alongside us. If you wish to share your condolences or messages of support, they will be received with gratitude by our department and by those who knew and loved Firefighter Brokes.

In the coming days, we will share more information about how we will honor his service and support the firefighters involved in this incident.

Thank you, Durham, for surrounding our DFD family with care during this profoundly difficult time.

Busy evening for Blairs Fire and Rescue

Since 4:30 this afternoon Blairs Fire and Rescue has responded to 11 calls for service. Members staffing the Engine, Rescue Engine, Utility, Tanker, Brush Truck, and both Ambulances have operated on medical emergencies, several motor vehicle crashes, and a vehicle fire. A motor vehicle crash in the 7700 block of U.S. Highway 29 required extrication of two patients, and a flyout for one. In total there were 23 members of our department operating on these incidents. Assistance for additional ambulances were provided by PCPS, Mount Hermon Fire and Rescue, as well as Chatham Rescue Squad.

Our department is also excited to announce that our 2026 Ford F-550/ Braun Remount Ambulance was placed in service at 5:30 this evening answering its first call for service transporting a patient from a crash to our helipad. We would like to thank those who supported us in completing this endeavor.

On Saturday Blairs Fire and Rescue welcomed the public during our Annual Community Day. Guests were treated to station and apparatus tours along with fire and extrication demonstrations. Our young community members worked their way through a simulated house fire in our ‘smoke house’ and were even given some nozzle time as firefighters for the day. We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to our sponsors and attendees for making such a great event possible.

Following Community Day, Blairs Fire and Rescue family gathered together in a time of fellowship to celebrate the Department’s 50th Year of Service. Established in September of 1976 on the premise of protecting the lives and property of the community, Blairs Fire and Rescue remains committed to our neighbors. Saturday’s ceremony paid special homage to the former members and their families for providing the foundation on which our organization stands today. We are grateful for the dedication of those who have contributed to Blairs Fire and Rescue’s mission: past, present and future.

As a reminder, please come out to our annual community day and 50th anniversary celebration tomorrow from 10-2!
