The Bloomfield Center Fire Department would like to congratulate four of our members on successfully completing an intense and physically demanding 4-day Swift Water Rescue Technician course!

Over the course of four grueling days, our firefighters were pushed both physically and mentally as they developed the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to operate safely and effectively in dangerous moving-water environments.

Throughout the course, members participated in classroom instruction and challenging hands-on evolutions covering:

🌊 Swift Water Hydrology – Understanding river currents, hydraulics, strainers, and other hazards associated with moving water.

🛟 Rescue Swimming & Self-Rescue – Practicing defensive and aggressive swimming techniques, navigating strong currents, and safely escaping hazardous situations.

🪢 Rope Rescue Systems – Utilizing ropes, throw bags, and specialized equipment to perform rescues in challenging water conditions.

🚨 Victim Rescue Techniques – Performing contact rescues, tethered rescues, and team-based rescue operations.

🤝 Teamwork & Rescue Scenarios – Applying their skills during realistic, physically demanding rescue evolutions that required communication, coordination, and quick decision-making.

WHY IS THIS TRAINING SO IMPORTANT?

The Farmington River is a significant target hazard within our region. Each year, countless individuals enjoy the river for kayaking, tubing, fishing, and other recreational activities. However, changing water levels, powerful currents, and unexpected hazards can quickly turn an enjoyable day into a life-threatening emergency.

While the Farmington River remains a major focus of our water rescue preparedness, the need for this training extends well beyond the riverbanks.

Across Connecticut and throughout the nation, we continue to witness increasingly unpredictable and extreme weather events. Heavy rainfall, flash flooding, severe storms, and rapidly rising waterways can create dangerous situations almost anywhere — including flooded roadways, neighborhoods, and areas that historically have not experienced significant flooding.

Water emergencies don’t always happen where we expect them, and our firefighters must be prepared to respond wherever the need arises.

One of the most valuable aspects of this course was the opportunity to train alongside firefighters from the East Granby Fire Department, Windsor Fire Department, Hazardville Fire Department, and Bridgeport Fire Department.

These partnerships strengthen our regional response capabilities and allow firefighters from multiple agencies to build the teamwork and familiarity needed when responding together to complex emergencies.

A special thank you to Water Training Resources (WTR) for providing outstanding instruction and challenging our members throughout the four-day program.

👏 Most importantly, congratulations to Firefighters, McKay, Thatcher, Keach-Longo, and Pfrang! Their dedication, willingness to challenge themselves, and commitment to expanding their skills reflect the professionalism and pride of the Bloomfield Center Fire Department.

Training like this requires a tremendous commitment of time, energy, and determination. It represents another important step in strengthening our department’s rescue capabilities and ensuring we are better prepared to protect the residents of Bloomfield and the surrounding communities.

🇺🇸 25 YEARS — WE WILL NEVER FORGET 🇺🇸

Today, the Bloomfield Center Fire Department joins our nation in solemn remembrance of the events of September 11, 2001.

Twenty-five years have passed, but the courage, sacrifice, and unity displayed that day remain forever etched in our hearts. We remember the 2,977 innocent lives lost, including the 343 members of the FDNY, 37 Port Authority Police officers, 23 NYPD officers, and all of the first responders who answered the call without hesitation.

We also remember those who survived, the families who continue to carry the loss of their loved ones, and the countless first responders who later became ill or lost their lives because of their service at Ground Zero.

For those of us in the fire service, September 11th is a lasting reminder of what it means to answer the call—to serve others, regardless of the danger and regardless of the cost.

25 years later, we remember their names. We honor their sacrifice. We carry their legacy forward.

🇺🇸 Never Forget. 9•11•2001 🇺🇸

This past Month, the Bloomfield Center Fire Department with friends and family had the privilege of recognizing four dedicated members whose service has left a lasting impact on our department and our community.

We gathered to celebrate and thank Ben Cook, Captain Mark Sperandio, Lieutenant Kellan Boudreau, and Assistant Chief Jim Simone as they move on from the Bloomfield Center Fire Department.

Each of these members has devoted countless hours answering alarms, training fellow firefighters, serving our residents, and helping make our department stronger. Their commitment, professionalism, and friendship have left a legacy that will not be forgotten.

While we are sad to see them leave, we are incredibly grateful for everything they have given to the department over the years. We wish each of them continued success, happiness, and safety in the next chapter of their lives.

On behalf of the officers, members, and the entire Bloomfield Center Fire Department family:

Thank you, Ben, Mark, Kellan, and Jim, for your dedication and selfless service. You will always have a place here in Bloomfield. Once a member of the Bloomfield Center Fire Department, always part of the family.

Please join us in thanking these four outstanding firefighters for their years of service and wishing them all the best in their future endeavors. 🚒

🌧️ HEAVY RAINFALL HAS CREATED FLOODED ROADWAYS ACROSS BLOOMFIELD 🌧️

Today’s rainfall has led to areas of standing water and localized flooding throughout Bloomfield, including roads, parking lots, and sidewalks.

🚨 TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN. 🚨

Just because you can see the road doesn’t mean it’s safe to drive through it. Floodwaters can:
💧 Hide washed-out pavement and debris.
🚗 Stall or sweep away your vehicle.
⚡ Pose unseen electrical hazards.

If you encounter a flooded roadway:
➡️ Turn around and find another route.
➡️ Slow down near standing water to prevent creating dangerous waves for other motorists and pedestrians.
➡️ Never walk through moving floodwater.

Our crews are monitoring conditions and responding to weather-related incidents as needed. Help us keep everyone safe by making smart decisions behind the wheel.

Stay alert, slow down, and remember:

🌊 TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN. 🌊

If you experience an emergency or encounter a dangerous situation, call 9-1-1.

🌫️ NOTICE TO THE BLOOMFIELD COMMUNITY 🌫️

If you’ve noticed a smoky smell or hazy skies today, there’s no need to be alarmed. The smoke is drifting into our area from the ongoing Canadian wildfires and is affecting air quality throughout much of the Northeast.

At this time, there are no large fires in Bloomfield causing the haze.

While the smoke may create reduced visibility and a noticeable odor, residents—especially children, older adults, and those with asthma, COPD, or other respiratory conditions—should consider limiting prolonged outdoor activity until air quality improves.

Here are a few simple precautions:
🔥 Keep windows and doors closed if the smoke becomes heavy.
🏃 Limit strenuous outdoor exercise when the air appears smoky.
💧 Stay hydrated.
🚒 Call 911 immediately if you see smoke or fire that appears to be originating within our community—don’t assume it’s related to the wildfires.

The Bloomfield Center Fire Department will continue to monitor conditions and respond to any emergencies as always.

Stay safe, stay informed, and thank you for helping keep our community safe.

Last night at approximately 10:08PM, the Bloomfield Center Fire Department was dispatched as part of a Task Force 52 activation to assist the Enfield Fire Department with a working structure fire in Enfield, Connecticut.

Task Force 52 is a regional mutual aid team made up of the following departments:
🚒 Blue Hills Fire Department, Bloomfield, CT
🚒 Bloomfield Center Fire Department
🚒 Windsor Locks Fire Department
🚒 South Windsor FIRE Department
🚒Windsor Volunteer Fire Department - CT
🚒 East Granby Vol. Fire Department
🚒 Suffield CT Fire Department
🚒 Bradley Fire Department
🚒 Connecticut Air National Guard Fire Department

Responding crews initially staged at the Enfield Square Mall before being assigned to either the fire scene or town coverage while Enfield companies remained committed to the incident.

With Enfield’s Fourth of July fireworks celebration taking place, the area was filled with residents and visitors, making the incident even more challenging for first responders.

Bloomfield’s crew was assigned the critical role of Rapid Intervention Team (RIT), standing by to immediately rescue any firefighter who became lost, trapped, or injured while operating inside the structure. Fortunately, their services were not needed, allowing firefighters on scene to safely complete their operations.

After assisting our neighboring community, Bloomfield firefighters returned home at approximately 1:30 AM, ready to answer the next call for service.

Thank you to all of the firefighters and emergency personnel who worked together to protect life and property through regional cooperation. Mutual aid partnerships like Task Force 52 ensure that our communities receive the resources they need when large-scale emergencies occur.
