The IU Police Academy, the only program like it in the country, has graduated more than 1,200 certified law enforcement officers since 1972, with many attaining local and federal level jobs in the criminal justice field. The cadet-officer program allows full-time Indiana University students to work in a law enforcement agency while pursuing a degree. In addition to gaining law enforcement experience, the student receives accreditation as a state certified law enforcement officer. Recruiting takes place each year starting in September. Full-time IU students with at least two years remaining in their academic studies and with a minimum accumulative GPA of 2.3 will be considered. Selection will be based on overall qualifications. Students are required to maintain their academic status in good standing throughout the program. The cadet program and the part-time officer program typically are each one year in length. The programs offer education, training and experience, as well as an opportunity to work within the criminal justice system. Though students are normally enrolled in an academic concentration related to criminal justice --- any major field of study is acceptable. Academy training and work experiences supplement these academic pursuits. In addition, some academic departments award credit for participation in the program. If accepted into the police academy program, the cadets receive all of the law enforcement training required by the State of Indiana. Upon successful completion, the cadets are commissioned as officers with full police authority. They then return to their campuses to continue part-time work, 12-20 hours a week, until graduation.

Meet Johnny Goode! Johnny graduated from the IU Police Academy in 2011 and majored in Entrepreneurship and Corporate Innovation. Fittingly, his favorite academy memory was finding a creative way to wake up one of the other recruits so that they would make it to PT on time.

After the IUPA, Johnny served with IUPD as a narcotics detective and member of the SWAT team for the Bloomington Critical Incident Response Team. The IUPA gave him a foundation for his career and taught him that he could overcome any obstacle. Today, he is President of MSP Manufacturing and runs four businesses.

His advice to future recruits: Treat everyone with dignity and respect, whether they are unhoused or a billionaire. No one is above anyone else. Lead from the front, set your team up for success, and listen more than you talk.

Meet Dustin Kruse! Dustin graduated from the IU Police Academy in 2011 and earned his degree in Criminal Justice and a minor in Anthropology. His favorite academy memory? Watching Johnny Goode’s best Mick Jagger impression during 0600 PT.

One of Dustin’s proudest professional accomplishments was becoming a Field Training Officer and Patrol Sergeant. He takes pride in having mentored officers who went on to excel in those same roles. After leaving law enforcement, he pursued a career in the fire service and now serves with the Monroe Fire Protection District.

His advice to future recruits: Don’t let your time with your fellow recruits pass you by. Build relationships, make lifelong friends, and don’t give yourself the option to quit. Years from now, when you have a tough day, remember why you started and the privilege of serving your community.

For many of our cadets, today was their first time working a home football game, and they got to check off “game day win” while they were at it.

Safe to say, they’re ready for the next one. Let’s go Hoosiers!
