IT’S YOU VERSUS YOU.
After years of living this out—and now doing this work for a living—I keep coming back to two things that help people change and succeed: Establishing an identity and the habits that reinforce it.
Speaking at Pendleton this evening, I wanted these men to understand that I am no better than any of them. I’ve been at the bottom, too. But at my bottom, I discovered the Rock—Jesus—and began building my life on Him and that's where my identity came in.
Every morning, I give God my first. I work out. I read something that helps me grow. These are my nonnegotiables because they reinforce who I am and who I’m becoming.
When those habits start slipping, I know it’s only a matter of time before other areas of my life follow. These are non negotiables for a reason, I mean 2+2 does =4.
It's important for them and me to remember we are saved by grace. That we will never be perfect, that our focus is on progression not perfection. We’re going to stumble. When we do all that matters is that we get up and grow from it.
I can guarantee I won't make mistake but I can guarantee my actions will reflect my values and whats important to me.
So thankful for the sponsors who made it possible for these men to take an “Art of the Start” book back with them—something to help them put the motivation and hope from this evening into practice.
Shout out to Jeff VanHorn and Ace Exteriors for believing in these men and helping us invest in their futures. 🙏
Your pain has purpose. It’s you versus you.
