Bluffton Township Fire District The Bluffton Township Fire District serves a 246 sq. https://blufftonfd.com/links

mile area of southern Beaufort County from Lemon Island (North) to Palmetto Bluff (South) and Jenkins Island (East) to New River (West) with 9 stations and 175 employees. The Bluffton Township Fire District (BTFD) was created by the Beaufort County Council in 1978 to provide fire and emergency services to all residents of the County south of the Broad River excluding the Town of Hilton Head Island and Daufuskie Island. However, long before the Fire District was officially chartered several concerned and dedicated citizens living in the area had already been volunteering and providing the much-needed services that helped shape what is the current BTFD. The District practices the core values of respecting our community and its citizens and guests, providing for continuous improvement of ourselves and services, providing leadership toward a safer community, providing service to our customers, maintaining the trust of the community, and controlling costs for the taxpayers. Today the BTFD has evolved with the needs of the community in mind and is a professional and accredited fire and emergency services department. The District is actively involved in its community and is one of the top ten employers in the Bluffton area with 170 full-time employees providing service to the citizens around the clock. The District operates nine (9) fully staffed fire stations positioned strategically throughout its operational area to provide for more rapid response of emergency services should a citizen need assistance.

Fire Prevention Week starts today, and Riggs is ready to help us Charge into Fire Safety!

This year, we are focusing on the safer use and charging of lithium-ion batteries. They power many of the devices we use every day, including phones, tablets, laptops, tools, and other electronics. A few simple habits can help reduce the risk of a battery fire.

Riggs’ reminders to start the week:
• Use the charger that came with your device or one from a trusted, approved brand.
• Charge devices on a hard, flat, non-flammable surface.
• Unplug devices when they are fully charged and avoid charging them overnight.
• Stop using batteries that are swollen, damaged, unusually hot, making strange sounds, or giving off an unusual smell.

Follow along with us throughout Fire Prevention Week for more tips from Riggs and the Bluffton Township Fire District.

$5,000 and a whole lot of community support!

This morning, representatives from the Sun City Buckeye Group presented the Bluffton Firefighter Foundation with a $5,000 donation at Station 35, our Headquarters.

Each year, the Buckeye Group hosts its Community Pancake Breakfast, Silent Auction, and Car Show for Sun City residents. What has become a Lowcountry tradition is also an important fundraiser supporting the local firefighters who serve the Sun City community.

Representatives from the Bluffton Firefighter Foundation joined our Station 35 firefighters and members of the Fire District administration to accept this year's donation.

We are incredibly grateful to the Sun City Buckeye Group and to the residents who continue to show such tremendous support for our firefighters year after year. Your generosity, partnership, and commitment to those who serve this community mean more than we can say.

And to our Buckeye friends, there is really only one way to end this...O-H!

Riggs has definitely been up to something!

For now, all we can tell you is this: Riggs has been busy behind the scenes, and the full reveal is coming during Fire Prevention Week, October 4 through 10.

We will finally find out during Fire Prevention Week, October 4 through 10.

Cross Schools brought their Kindergarten and Transitional Kindergarten classes out to see us this week, and it was a great morning at the station.

The visit tied into their community helpers unit, and our crew walked the kids through fire safety basics, let them explore a fire engine up close, and showed off some of the gear firefighters wear on a call. Sparky the Fire Dog even stopped by to say hello.

Approximately 50 students and 8 teachers made the trip, and it is always one of our favorite things to do. Getting kids comfortable around firefighters and fire trucks now means they know exactly what to do if they ever need us.

Big thanks to the Station 38 crew for their hospitality: Battalion Chief Todd Harvey, Lt. Andrew Hatcher, and Firefighters Cal Shanks, Matt Bex, Juan Gambia, Carter Barrett, and Colton Boyles. Thanks also to American Red Cross of South Carolina volunteer Andi Stewart and our Community Risk Reduction team, Haley Frazier, Sam Dulla, and Sparky the Fire Dog, for making the day happen.

Thanks for visiting, Cross Schools. Come back anytime!
