Brother Bear’s Story of Resilience ❤️‍🩹

Brother Bear came to our Riverside shelter in Jurupa Valley in mid-August when he was just two months old. We checked him for a possible broken front right leg, and our veterinary team noticed he couldn’t put weight on it for quite a while. He was transferred to the Coachella Valley Animal Campus for treatment. After wearing a cast for almost five weeks, his front leg healed completely. Now, Brother Bear has been adopted and is enjoying life in his forever home.

Every day, animals come to the Riverside County Department of Animal Services for shelter, care, and a fresh start. You can support vulnerable pets like Brother Bear by fostering, donating, or volunteering to give sick or injured pets a second chance.

Every share, like, and donation makes a difference! 🙌 Help more pets like Brother Bear by donating at www.rcdas.org/donate or become a foster by signing up at www.rcdas.org/foster

Trunk or Treat 2026 was a success! 🎉🐶🐱

More than 100 pets found new homes at our annual fee-waived adoption event. Our furry friends welcomed visitors, and some even got to leave their kennels to meet people face-to-face. Our community enjoyed creatively decorated trunks, candy, food, and music! Thanks for joining us, we hope to see you again next year! 🎃

If you couldn’t attend but still want to meet our pets, you can see adoptable animals by visiting www.rcdas.org/adopt.

✈️🐾 30 shelter pets. One lifesaving flight. Countless new possibilities!

Earlier this week, 30 shelter pets, nearly all big dogs, took to the skies with Wings of Rescue for a fresh start!

Of the 30 pets, 26 headed to Seattle Humane in Washington, while four made their way to Mountainside Hope in Canada, where they'll have new opportunities to find loving homes.

These lifesaving flights do more than give shelter pets a second chance. They also free up critical kennel space for the animals who continue to arrive at our overcrowded shelters every day.

❤️ Every flight makes a difference, and every donation helps us continue this lifesaving work.

✈️ Help make the next flight possible: rcdas.org/donate

A special thank you to Wings of Rescue, Seattle Humane and Mountainside Hope for helping us give these deserving pets a new beginning! 🐶❤️

From Lost & Injured to Healed & Home❤️‍🩹

Candy (A1936121) was brought to our Riverside shelter as a stray on September 6th. She was frightened, in distress, and unable to tell us where she came from or how she was injured.

Our veterinary team saw that she could not put any weight on her right back leg and could only stand for a few seconds before the pain was too much. After a careful check and X-rays, they found she had several broken bones in her pelvis and thigh. Candy was transported to the Coachella Valley Animal Campus, where Dr. Snook performed lifesaving surgery by amputating her injured leg.

Despite all the hardships she suffered, Candy's spirit remained unbroken. She wagged her tail, accepted pets from every staff member, and melted hearts with her sweetness, showing that even during one of the most painful experiences, she still had love to give.

Candy quickly adjusted to her new situation. She learned how to walk steadily on three legs, and it was clear she was ready for a new home. She was adopted on September 23, and we're thankful we were able to help her continue her journey.
Cases like Candy's are not unusual among our shelter animals. Every day, animals arrive lost, hurt, and scared, and they need a safe place to heal while they recover.
If you want to help animals like Candy, you can visit our Most Vulnerable Pets page and donate to our Animal Health Fund to give pets a second chance.

On this World Rabies Day, we'd like to remind Riverside County residents to stay vigilant to help keep people and pets safe from the spread of rabies.

Rabies is a viral disease that can spread to humans and other animals through bites, scratches, or oral secretions. Without timely medical care after exposure, rabies is nearly 100% fatal once symptoms develop.

In California, bats are the most common source of rabies. Never pick up a bat and safety proof homes by sealing gaps and openings that could allow bats inside.

Share these tips with family and friends:

🐾Never approach animals who appear to be injured, sick, or dead.
🐾Avoid contact with bats and other wild animals (skunks, racoons, foxes and coyote.
🐾If you have pets, keep them up to date on rabies vaccines and away from wildlife when possible.
🐾If you or your pets have been in contact with any wildlife or sick-acting animals, particularly if you've been bitten or scratched, seek medical attention and contact RCDAS Animal Control at (951) 358-7387.

In Riverside County, all cats and dogs must be vaccinated against rabies to obtain a license. Vaccinations should start at 12 weeks of age, with regular boosters for life. RCDAS offers low-cost vaccinations at shelter locations by appointment only.

Sadie’s journey home took her more than 1,000 miles. 🐾❤️

The 7-year-old Cane Corso mix arrived at Riverside County Animal Services as a stray in February. After months in the shelter, Sadie received a new opportunity through our Ironwood Dog Foster Program.

At Ironwood State Prison, dogs from our shelters receive daily care, structure, enrichment and individual attention while they wait for adoption. Sadie quickly became a favorite.
That’s where her path crossed with Olivia’s family.
Olivia lives in Washington State and first heard about Sadie through her husband, who participates in the program. He fell in love with Sadie and encouraged Olivia to adopt her. So Olivia drove from Washington to Southern California to bring Sadie home.

“I had been told that she was everyone’s favorite dog, and I can definitely see why,” Olivia shared. “She is very sweet and playful, and very affectionate.”

At 85 pounds, Sadie also thinks she belongs in her mom’s lap. She loves cuddles, kisses and being brushed. She even stands in front of the vacuum waiting for Olivia to run the nozzle over her. And every now and then, she opens up a dog bed to investigate the stuffing inside, followed by an appropriately apologetic face.
After months of waiting, Sadie found her home.

Now, more dogs at Ironwood are waiting for someone to choose them. 🐶
