Volunteer Spotlight: Jon Sussman
For more than three years, Jon Sussman has been delivering Meals on Wheels through Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services (JFS), turning his Friday mornings into a weekly mitzvah that has become an important part of his life.
When Jon first began volunteering, he was looking for something meaningful to do during retirement. What started as a way to fill his time has grown into something much more personal. Today, Jon feels that he has become a part of the lives of the 12 individuals he delivers meals to each week.
Jon looks forward to seeing his “people” and the smiles that greet him when they open their doors and see him "schlepping" their much-needed dinners to their kitchen tables. For Jon, the deliveries are about more than providing a meal—they are an opportunity to connect, share a moment of companionship, and bring a little joy to someone’s day.
Whether he is wishing someone a good Shabbat or simply stopping to say hello, Jon treasures these brief moments of connection. He has even developed a special tradition with one of his clients: each week, they exchange silly riddles, making sure to come up with new ones for every Friday visit.
“I can’t believe how quickly each Friday comes,” Jon says, reflecting on his experience. “I can bring a little joy to these wonderful people.”
Jon’s dedication is a beautiful reminder that a mitzvah can be as simple as showing up, sharing a smile, and letting someone know they are cared for. His commitment to Meals on Wheels demonstrates how meaningful connections can grow from small acts of kindness—and how volunteering can enrich the lives of both the giver and the recipient.
Thank you, Jon, for making Fridays brighter for so many members of our community!
