Thanks to the Spartanburg League of Women Voters and NAACP for hosting a candidate forum tonight. I was glad to meet voters where they are and learn more about what’s at the top of the list of concern for Spartanburg.

Today, the League of Women Voters, Campaign Legal Center, and state and local Leagues nationwide – including the League of Women Voters Charleston – secured a permanent court victory protecting our ability to register new U.S. citizens to vote at naturalization ceremonies. 🗳️🎉

A federal court in Maryland permanently blocked the USCIS rule that barred civic groups like ours from offering this service.

In 2024, the League registered more than 15% of all new American citizens to vote at naturalization ceremonies, part of a decades-long tradition of welcoming new Americans into our democracy on Day 1 of citizenship. This ruling means we can keep showing up, just like we always have.

The S.C. Department of Education has posted directions for accessing the new draft social studies standards to allow public review and feedback. The deadline for submitting comments is October 9. You will be able to submit comments only on the grade bands/courses that you indicate when you access the survey. The directions on the website will explain that you must enter your email address and identify your role before you can provide feedback.

If you want to provide feedback on the high school standards, you might consider these criticisms from educators:

1. Many high school social studies teachers would prefer to see a requirement for two units of U.S. History and the Constitution, rather than one.
2. Another possible improvement would be to increase the requirement for Government and Economics from a half-unit to one full unit. Increasing either of these requirements would require a change in state law.
3. A third concern is that the draft standards emphasize facts, but not critical thinking or analysis skills.

There is a surprising emphasis on initiating a Western Civilization course, while the amount of instruction in geography has been substantially reduced.

You are invited to provide feedback on any aspect of the draft social studies standards. The implementation plans for the new standards will not be written until after the November election, so the outcome of that election could potentially have an affect on how these content standards are put into practice.

Click here to go to the SC Department of Education page for providing public input. The directions for the survey are at the bottom of the page.
