This remote hillside in southwest Colorado is the biggest science experiment you've never heard of. And it's helping us understand how to manage an ecosystem across the entire West—all while keeping communities safe from wildfire.

Big thanks to collaborators at UC Berkeley, the US Forest Service Rocky Mtn Research Station, University of Nevada, Colorado State, USGS, and many many others who have made the Dawson Project possible—but extra special thanks to our partners at Bureau of Land Management Fire for really driving this whole thing, and bringing us at the Intermountain West Joint Venture in to tell the story. The Bureau of Land Management does so much to protect Western habitat and communities, and this is just one small piece of it.

The Rapid City Veterans Program reached major milestones in 2025, including record recruitment, extensive training, and impactful wildfire mitigation efforts.

In collaboration with local and federal partners, the program completed more than 1,500 acres of prescribed burning to reduce wildfire risk, conducted extensive public education outreach, and led notable projects such as the Lang Ranch initiative, which provided firewood to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and mulch to a military training facility.

The mission remains clear: reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire to the Rapid City community while supporting military veterans as they transition to civilian life and pursue career pathways.

Looking ahead, this program is poised for continued growth and success in wildfire suppression, prevention, and mitigation.
