It was a stellar few days in Sun Valley this week at the Water Law & Resource Issues Seminar.

Over 300 members came out to engage and learn about the latest issues pertaining to water in Idaho. The agenda was stacked, including an elections update from Phil McGrane for Idaho, a live episode of The Ranch Podcast with Matthew Todd, and memories, stories, and lessons learned over a reflection on the 50th anniversary of the Teton Dam failure.

Once again, we are humbled and grateful to our members who continually show up and put the time in to make a positive difference for our water resources.

Idaho has an impressive interconnected system of reservoirs, canals and ditches.

Do you know why these systems exist?

Idaho’s reservoir systems service multiple uses, including recreation, but the primary purpose for Idaho’s reservoirs is for irrigation water storage.

Thanks to the Congressional Western Caucus for inviting IWUA to participate in a staff briefing on the challenges of drought in the west. IWUA joined representatives from National Water Resources Association, the Family Farm Alliance and the Colorado River Water Conservation District to discuss how drought is impacting western communities and economies and how Congress can help.

Years like this highlight the need for partnerships in western water management. Local stakeholders, states and the federal government must work together to provide a resilient water future.

In Idaho, this year's drought is having real consequences. Cropping patterns are changing, acres are being fallowed, storage reservoirs are being depleted at record pace, and communities are instructing residents to conserve water.

We are fortunate to have partners like the Congressional Western Caucus working to better understand the challenges and identify solutions

The New York Canal was originally constructed in the early 1900's. To ensure that the canal remains safe and reliable by today's standards, the Boise Project Board of Control works tirelessly through the winter months to upgrade the canal so it is ready for irrigation season.

The roadways around canals are not intended for use as a greenbelt. If you are recreating on a canal road, you may be trespassing.

Are you ditchsmart?

If you live near a canal, talk about it to your kids like you would a busy road.

💧Canals are full of hidden dangers.
💧Do not enter a canal for any reason.
💧If you are near a canal, you may be trespassing.
💧Children should never be alone near a canal.
💧Stay out of canals, they are not built for recreation.

Have the canal conversation.
