Today, firefighters continued mopping up smoldering pine needle litter and logs in Station Creek and patrolled the rest of the fire perimeter. They will continue this work for the next several days, targeting and extinguishing smoldering fuels to reduce sources of smoke impacting the community.
Yesterdayโs rain, cloud cover, and cooler temperatures helped to decrease smoke production, but we expect there will still be visible smoke to hikers and the community as the forecast is for warming and drying weather.

Firefighters continued to focus their efforts on mopping up smoldering pine needles around Station Creek yesterday and will continue to do so today and through this week. Containment lines are secure, are actively patrolled, and there remains little chance for the fire to threaten these lines.
Earlier this morning, rain moved over the fire with the nearby Little Anderson Remote Automated Weather Station (RAWS) registering 0.12โ of rain. This precipitation will temporarily reduce smoldering in the pine needles today but is not enough to eliminate heat remaining within areas of heavy forest canopy.
The current weather forecast is for warming and drying conditions later this week. This will likely result in noticeable smoke, but conditions should improve as available fuels continue to burn out and firefighters actively extinguish smoldering areas.
The current trail and area closure will expire on June 10 at 4 p.m. after which hikers on Station Creek Trail may encounter firefighters working in the area.

Rainbow Point Campground and Boat Access will be closed for public safety as numerous hazard trees are removed.
Englemann spruce trees, found throughout the campground, are showing signs of root rot. These trees are known to be highly susceptible to such rot, and the result is trees that are very prone to falling, especially during wind events. This situation is like what happened in nearby Amanita Campground in 2023.
We regret the inconvenience of having to close this popular recreation site. We look forward to opening it back up as soon as it is safe to do so.
For a nearby boat access alternative to Lake Cascade, consider Idaho State Parkโs Buttercup Campground located about two miles south of Rainbow Point Campground.

UPDATE: Poorman Prescribed Fire Update (June 8 at 10:00 a.m.)
Firefighters did not conduct any ignition operations on the Poorman project yesterday, June 7. Crews focused on patrolling control lines and monitoring areas with higher smoke production. All control lines remain secure, and no fire has moved outside the project boundary.
Dry winds and steady sun continued to dry out thicker duff in Station Creek, especially under the heavier forest canopy. This caused an increase in smoldering activity yesterday afternoon and overnight. Firefighters completed targeted mopโup work in these areas to reduce smoke and will continue addressing hot spots in Station Creek today.
Smoke may be visible in Garden Valley over the next several days, with much of todayโs smoke coming from smoldering logs, heavy fuels, and pineโneedle litter within Station Creek. Smoke impacts to residents and roadways are expected to decrease quickly in the coming days.
A weather system is moving in, with rain expected overnight June 8 into midโmorning June 9. Forecasts call for 0.10โ0.25 inches, with the possibility of higher amounts under thunderstorms.
The area closure, including the Station Creek Trail, remains in effect through June 10 at 4 p.m. It may be lifted earlier if conditions allow firefighters to safely reopen the area.

UPDATE: Poorman Prescribed Fire June 7, 2026 at 1100 am
On June 6, firefighters burned several pockets of unburned grass inside the project area. Burning was limited both in acreage and time spent igniting as most light fuels have been ignited. Any threat to the line from small, unburned areas of grass will be minimal. Firefighters will continue to identify interior pockets of unburned grass, evaluate potential threat to the line, and take action to burn them or secure them using mop-up if necessary.
Smoke will continue to be visible in the project area for a while as heavy logs, standing dead trees, and small pockets of grass or pine needle litter smolder. Smoke impact to residents and roadways will rapidly diminish over the coming days.
Control lines are secure and firefighters continue to patrol them and take action where necessary to extinguish fire activity close to the line that could pose a threat in high winds. The prescribed fire is completely within control lines.
The National Weather Service is confident that rain will occur over or near the project area between Monday and Tuesday nights.
The area closure order, including the Station Creek Trail, is still in effect through June 10 at 4 p.m. The closure may be lifted earlier if firefighters determine the trail and area can safely be used by the public.

UPDATE: Poorman Prescribed Fire - June 6, 2026 at 1030 am.
Firefighters continued burning the remaining grass inside the project area June 5. Fire was brought down to the Banks-Lowman Road in the afternoon. Several small, unburned pockets of grass remain further interior. Firefighters will ignite those today.
Some rocks and burning logs were dislodged by fire on June 5. Temporary traffic control measures were implemented on Banks-Lowman Road during the evening to keep traffic clear of road hazards while firefighters occasionally removed debris from the road. The road is open and drivers should be alert to rolling material. Firefighters will stay engaged on the road and will remove any rolling debris from the road.
Smoke impact to the community and roads should trend better beginning Monday morning with interior ignition of grass mostly complete on June 5.

The Poorman Prescribed Fire, ignited in late April, covers 2,692 acres and is accomplishing its goals of reducing the risk of severe wildfires and improving forest health. However, unusually dry May weather dried out grasses and other fine fuels, leading to more lingering smoke than anticipated. While the fire remains secure within containment lines, we recognize the smoke has been challenging for the community.
For public safety, a temporary area and trail closure is still in effect through June 10 at 4 p.m. Full details are available on our Alerts page: https://inciweb.wildfire.gov/.../idbof-poorman-prescribed...

UPDATE: Poorman Prescribed Fire โ June 5, 2026 at noon
Fire crews have continued burning grass and light fuels within the Poorman Prescribed Fire area southeast of Crouch. These efforts help reduce long term smoke, but they have temporarily increased morning smoke in Garden Valley.
Burning operations are expected to continue through Saturday, and smoke will remain highly visible into Sunday late morning. Smoke impacts should lessen afterward, starting Monday morning.

Fire crews are continuing daily patrols on the Poorman Prescribed Fire, located about 4 miles southeast of Crouch. You may still see occasional smoke as grasses and other light fuels dry out and burn.
Because May has been unusually dry, firefighters will be widening and reinforcing existing containment lines by carefully burning small strips of lighter fuels along the edges. These operations are planned to begin tomorrow and may result in increased visible smoke.
