From the Butcher Block to the Electrical Trade: David's Success Story!

Sometimes finding the right career means being willing to take a different path.

David was working as a butcher in Southport when he realized he wanted something different for his future. He was interested in the electrical trade but needed an opportunity to gain experience and develop his skills.

Through the partnership of NCWorks, Brunswick Community College, and Connected Home Inc., David was able to take those next steps!

With assistance through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Title I program, David participated in a Work Experience (WEX) with Connected Home Inc., where he gained hands-on experience and discovered that the electrical trade was the right fit for him. He went on to complete Electrical I at BCC, participate in an electrical apprenticeship, and complete On-the-Job Training (OJT) with Connected Home Inc.

And today? David is employed full-time with Connected Home Inc., earning $20 an hour!

But his story doesn't stop there! He's preparing to take Electrical II at BCC as he continues developing his skills and advancing in his career. David's success is a great example of what can happen when a motivated individual, a supportive employer, and workforce development partners work together.

Congratulations, David! We're excited to see where your career takes you next!

💙 October is Workforce Development Professionals Month!

We're continuing our celebration of the people who make a difference every day at NCWorks at Brunswick Community College!

🎥 Today, meet Maria! Maria works with adults and dislocated workers, helping people explore career opportunities, gain new skills, access training, and find their way back into the workforce.

Maria talks about two opportunities you may not know are available through NCWorks: Work Experience (WEX) and On-the-Job Training (OJT). A WEX gives eligible individuals an opportunity to gain hands-on workplace experience, develop skills, and build confidence. An OJT allows eligible individuals to learn while working, while participating employers may receive assistance with a portion of training wages.

Both programs can make a difference for someone looking for an opportunity and for a local business looking to build its workforce. And that's what we love about workforce development. Sometimes all someone needs is an opportunity to learn, a little guidance, and someone willing to help them take that next step.

Thank you, Maria, for the work you do to help people move forward!

Are you looking for a new career opportunity? Or are you a business interested in developing your workforce? Connect with the NCWorks Career Center at Brunswick Community College. We'd love to help you explore what's available!

Manufacturing Day 2026!

Manufacturing Day is about helping students see the connection between local careers, education, training, and their future.

As part of Brunswick Community College’s annual Manufacturing Day, local high school students visited Flow Sciences, Inc. in Leland to see modern manufacturing firsthand and learn about the skills and career opportunities available in the industry. Students then returned to BCC for lunch and a workshop focused on education and training pathways.

The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Training Team, alongside BCC Workforce and Trades Education and Customized Training, helped guide students throughout the day — a great example of education, workforce development, and industry working together to build our local talent pipeline.

Pictured from left: WIOA Team - Ashlee Atkinson, Sarah Mobley, a WIOA Youth participant, and Amy Latta-Spain.

This year’s event also comes during North Carolina Manufacturing Week, September 28–October 2, 2026.

Building financial skills through community partnership!

Our Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Youth participants had the opportunity to take part in a Reality of Money Workshop at Brunswick Community College, led by Rae Stephens with State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU).

Through this interactive experience, participants explored real-world financial decisions involving budgeting, everyday expenses, credit, education, and planning for the future. These are practical skills that can make a lasting difference as young people move into employment, education, and greater independence.

We are especially grateful for partnerships like this one. Rae is not only a valuable community resource through SECU, but also an active member of our Brunswick County NCWorks Partnership. Bringing partners together allows us to connect participants with knowledge, resources, and experiences that go well beyond a traditional job search.

A big thank you to Rae Stephens and SECU for investing in our young people and helping them build the financial confidence they will carry into their careers and their lives.

Workforce development is stronger when we work together. 💙
