Boone County Emergency Management is aware of the confirmed case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5N1 HPAI) in a multi-species backyard flock in Boone County.

We have been in communication with the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS), Iowa Health and Human Services (HHS), and Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management regarding the case. IDALS and USDA are managing the response and have not requested any additional assistance or resources from Boone County at this time.

A few important things for the public to know:

• The CDC continues to consider the risk to the general public to be low.

• Human infections are uncommon and have generally occurred after close, prolonged, and unprotected contact with infected animals or contaminated environments. Current U.S. cases have not been linked to person-to-person spread.

• The term “highly pathogenic” describes how severely the virus affects domestic poultry. It does not describe the level of risk to people.

• Eggs and poultry products remain safe to eat when properly handled and cooked to an internal temperature of 165°F.

• Poultry producers and backyard flock owners should review their biosecurity practices and watch their birds for unusual illness or deaths. Suspected cases should be reported to a veterinarian and IDALS at 515-281-5305.

• Anyone who finds five to ten or more sick or dead wild birds in one area should report the finding to Iowa DNR wildlife staff.

Additional information is available in the full IDALS press release linked below:
