- The Phantom Hiker of Grandfather Mountain: A bearded man in old-fashioned gear who walks the backcountry trails, never speaks, and vanishes into the woods.

- The Brown Mountain Lights: Mysterious glowing lights that drift over Linville Gorge and have puzzled scientists for generations.

- The Lingering Residents of Hickory Ridge: Phantom footsteps and the scent of pipe to***co inside Revolutionary-era log cabins.

- The Demon Dog of Valle Crucis: A red-eyed beast said to watch from the churchyard near the historic Church of the Holy Cross.
