20Points of NH Military History: Point #20 🎖️

🇺🇸Above and Beyond the Call of Duty: To complete our journey through military history, we conclude at the final pillar with the highest decoration a service member can receive for valor in combat. Highlights from Point #20:

🏛️ Authorized in War: On July 12, 1863, in the wake of the Battle of Gettysburg, Congress authorized the Medal of Honor.
🎖️ The Supreme Standard: Presented by the President in the name of Congress, the award recognizes a member of the armed forces who distinguishes themselves "conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life, above and beyond the call of duty."
🌲 Granite State Heroes: As of Veterans Day, November 11, 2003, fifty-nine New Hampshire men had been awarded the Medal of Honor, five posthumously.

Each pillar along the NH State Veterans Cemetery Historical Walkway preserves a crucial story of sacrifice, service, and courage.

This historical walkway is one of many projects funded by generous donations made to the NHVCA.

of NH Military History: Point #19 🏜️Desert Shield/Desert Storm

🛡️Standing Swift and Strong: As the Cold War drew to a close, a new crisis in the Middle East tested America's military capabilities and New Hampshire's citizen-soldiers were ready on the front lines! Today, we explore Point #19 of the NH State Veterans Cemetery Historical Walkway. Highlights from Point #19:

🌍 A Global Coalition: Following Saddam Hussein’s 1990 invasion of Kuwait, the United States spearheaded a 28-nation coalition early in 1991 to launch a decisive air campaign and swift ground offensive.

✈️ In the Skies: The 157th Air Refueling Wing flew an incredible 322 sorties during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm to keep coalition aircraft fueled and mission-ready.

🚛 On the Ground & Sea: Granite State ground and naval forces answered the call, including the 744th Transportation Company (Hillsborough, Claremont, and Somersworth) deployed to Saudi Arabia, alongside Manchester's Company B, 1st Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment and Mobile Inshore Undersea Warfare Unit 202 of the U.S. Naval Reserve in the Persian Gulf.

Each pillar along the NH State Veterans Cemetery Historical Walkway preserves a crucial story like the dedication of our Gulf War veterans.

Honoring Our Fallen, Supporting Our Families: NH Military Su***de Loss Memorial Update 🇺🇸🎗️

We are honored to share a major milestone: Phase One of the NH Military Su***de Loss Memorial Monument is underway. The foundation is set and the bench is installed in a beautiful, quiet setting near the magnificent Army Monument.

This sacred space exists because every Veteran carries battles both seen and unseen. Too many service members return with invisible wounds, and too many families are left grieving without acknowledgment or a place to heal. This memorial stands as a permanent place of remembrance, reflection, and hope. Because their service mattered. Because their lives mattered. END THE SILENCE. HONOR THE SERVICE.

A heartfelt thank you to Wayne DeHart for generously funding this project (as well as the Army Monument and so much more), and to everyone supporting this effort.

The NH Veterans Cemetery Association (NHVCA) is proud to serve as the fiscal agent for this vital project, working alongside the dedicated NH Military Su***de Loss Monument Committee to bring this vision to life.

Thank you for standing with our military families. Stay tuned for updates as we continue this journey together. If you would like to donate to the project, you can do so on the NHVCA . ORG website, just select NH Military Su***de Loss Memorial from the DONATE menu.❤️💙

20Points of NH Military History: Point #18🎖️

Honoring Valor and Sacrifice: The Vietnam War saw thousands of service members deploy overseas in defense of freedom, including dedicated units right from the Granite State. Today, we reflect on Point #18 of the NH State Veterans Cemetery Historical Walkway.

Highlights from Point #18:
🌏 A Decades-Long Struggle: Driven by the Cold War policy of containment, U.S. advisors arrived in the 1950s, followed by full air, naval, and ground forces under President Johnson by 1965. At its peak, over 500,000 American troops were stationed in South Vietnam.
🛡️ The Northeast's Largest Guard Unit: In September 1968, over 500 New Hampshire National Guardsmen deployed to Vietnam. NH's 3rd Battalion, 197th Field Artillery stood as the largest National Guard unit from the entire Northeast to serve in the conflict!
🕯️ A Lasting Commitment: While U.S. involvement concluded in 1973, the courage and selfless service of our Vietnam veterans remain deeply woven into New Hampshire's military tradition.

Each pillar along the NH State Veterans Cemetery Historical Walkway preserves a crucial story like the brave service of the 197th Field Artillery.

On This Day in New Hampshire Military History: October 15, 1961 🏛️🎖️

When Cold War tensions spiked in divided Germany following the construction of the Berlin Wall, President John F. Kennedy ordered a massive call-up of U.S. reserve forces.

65 years ago today, New Hampshire answered the call.

On October 15, 1961, three major New Hampshire Army National Guard field artillery units were activated into federal service for the Berlin Crisis:
• 4th Howitzer Battalion, 197th Artillery
• 1st Battalion, 172nd Field Artillery
• 2nd Battalion, 172nd Field Artillery

Citizen-soldiers left their civilian jobs and communities across towns like Manchester, Concord, and Portsmouth to prepare for rapid deployment to Europe. These Granite State artillerymen served as vital operational reserves during one of the tensest standoffs in modern history.

Today we honor the service and readiness of New Hampshire’s National Guardsmen who stood ready when the nation needed them most. 🇺🇸

A Monument to Defense: Did you know that the largest construction project in New Hampshire history was built right on the Seacoast to safeguard our nation during the Cold War? Today, we explore Point #17 of the NH State Veterans Cemetery Historical Walkway!

Highlights from Point #17:

🏗️ The Largest Project in NH History: In 1950, plans were announced for a massive air base in Newington and Portsmouth costing roughly $83 million, featuring runways over 2 miles long to house long-range bombers of the Strategic Air Command.

🎖️ Honoring a Medal of Honor Hero: Groundbreaking began in 1954, and on September 7, 1957, the base was formally dedicated in honor of Captain Harl Pease (1917–1942)—a Plymouth native posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in WWII.

✈️ A Lasting Legacy: Pease closed as a Strategic Air Command base and home of the famous 509th Bomber Wing in 1991, but it continues to serve as the active home of the New Hampshire Air National Guard.

Each pillar along the NH State Veterans Cemetery Historical Walkway preserves a crucial story like the legacy of Pease Air Force Base.
