NEVER FORGET: In Boston, a BPD Hero Sign proudly stands in the area of 540 Comm Ave to forever honor the memory of a brave man who gave his life in service to our city. May we never forget the heroism and sacrifice of Officer John Gallagher killed in the line of duty on May 25, 1962.

On Oct. 1, 1962, President JFK designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day in honor and remembrance of police officers killed or disabled in the line of duty. In light of that tremendous sacrifice, the American Flag on all government buildings is flown at half-staff on May 15 every year.

We support Sen. Patrick O’Connor, the sponsor of Senate Bill 1216, which calls for a mandatory minimum 25-year sentence for anyone brazen and evil enough to shoot at police officers. The system is clearly broken and the days of normalizing violence against police officers MUST END. Senator O’Connor believes this week’s shooting on Memorial Drive was, not only predictable, but also avoidable. And, we couldn’t agree with him more. It’s never okay to hurt or harm police officers. And, if you try to shoot and kill a police officer, the punishment should be swift, severe and, at minimum, a 25-year mandatory sentence.
