Our story began in Boston with a vision.
We envision fewer low-income and homeless families, less apartment managers dealing with archaic paper application and a daunting waitlist system and housing that is both affordable and abundant.
Our software will create one central place for the public to find all types of affordable housing, and more importantly apply and track applications.
Visit Commonrent.org for more about our mission and how you can contribute.

Using software with verified real world success, we plan to automate and simplify the affordable housing process.
Here are a few highlights of our software:
- Speed of application processing
- More visibility and availability of affordable housing
- Eliminated paper usage, cost savings, less waste

The typical U.S renter is expected to be housing cost burdened by the end of 2021.
Hud defines cost burdened families as those who pay more 30 percent of their income for housing and may have difficulties affording necessities such as food, clothing, and medical care.
Severe rent burden is defined as paying more than 50 percent of one’s income on rent.
Affordable housing is essential.

The Great Reshuffling
According to Pew Research Center, 52% of young adults resided with their parents for the first time since the Great Depression.
Zillow conducted research and found that 11% of Americans say they have moved in the past year whether by choice or by circumstance.
Life and financial uncertainty are among the top reasons.
The Housing crisis is apparent with renters and job losses, stagnant affordable housing assistance applications and subsequent evictions and homelessness.
Using technology, we aim to help others find home.

According to the State of the nation’s housing report 2021, The Census Bureau’s Household Pulse Surveys show that more than half of all renter households had lost income between March 2020 and March 2021.
In 2020, Hud assessed homelessness to have increased by 580,000 people, up 13,000 from the previous year.
A new affordable housing system is needed and inevitable as rents continue to increase renter cost burdens throughout the country.
Housing should be affordable and accessible.

“As schools closed across the country, an estimated 1.5 million school-age children were homeless or in doubled-up living situations. Renters, who are more vulnerable than homeowners, fell behind on their rent: in June 2020, 11.4 million were behind on rent. Low-income renters—many of whom work in the service industries hit hard by the pandemic shutdown—were left with the constant threat of eviction.” (urban.org 7/2021)
The Pandemic revealed something that many of us already know, having a home matters.
At Commonrent, we envision fewer low-income and homeless families.
We aim to make an impact with our software by creating one central place to find, apply for and track all types of affordable housing.

“From the beginning, local governments struggled with administrative headaches. Some cities and states couldn’t distribute rental aid until the legislature wrote a bill to create the program. This was the moment when officials first understood how much different the low-income rental market was from other housing markets.” (Nytimes, 2021)
Applications for aid, housing lotteries and more that go unseen and unprocessed are some of the biggest issues that perpetuate homelessness around the country.
Our mission is to facilitate family applications to affordable housing and administration of applications through an easy to use online system.
We plan to automate and simplify the affordable housing application process with our software.
