In Pots that Work — Top to Bottom, taught by Tyler Gulden, participants will learn and build on wheel throwing skills to create new forms and refine favorites with an eye on the details that make strong functional pots. In depth demonstrations, historical and contemporary examples, and lots of hands-on work will be at the heart of our exploration of a wide range of pottery forms. One-on-one, and as a group, we will discuss the decisions we make as we work, and thoughtfully address the details of the pieces we create – rims, feet, waists, bellies, shoulders, handles, spouts, lids – as each is a part of the piece that demands consideration.
Use of slips, washes and glazes will be covered, as well as fundamentals of Cone 5/6 firing in electric kilns.
Open to all levels.

The Mark and Beyond: Painting, A Doorway to Possibility with Timothy Hawkesworth & Lala Zeitlyn explores the continuing relevance and power of the personal mark as the foundation of the painting and drawing. Participants examine how this hand-made characteristic, combined with physicality of materials, can become a vehicle for creativity that roots communication back into lived experience while offering the possibility of more expansive and accelerated consciousness. Tim and Lala work individually with each participant, focusing on their personal vision. No experience needed: open to all.

Nancy McCarthy teaches Fluid Light in Week 1 of MassArt New England, running July 14 to 20.
The summer greens and chromatic grays of trees, and field, as well as a variety of still life set-ups will be our sources of visual content. Using watercolor, gouache or both, participants will translate what is observed into shape, value, and hue. A series of in-studio exercises will enhance fluency with the mediums and deepen color mixing ability and compositional strategies. Each day multiple studies will be completed, with the goal of describing the light environment in each. This course is ideal for those people new to watercolor or painting and those with extensive experience.
