Fascinating article in the NYT Sunday magazine about the queen of Israel’s culture wars and the defense of Mizrachi culture and society which has been sidelined and belittled since the founding of the State and definitely needs to be honored and empowered as part of a complicated civil rights struggle within Israel. But in the hands of Miri Regev and her Likudnick and more fascistic friends, this is all framed as a rightwing attack on Ashkenazim and leftwingers in general, with tolerance and multiculturalism trashed in the mix and a more fervent state sponsored McCarthyism gaining dominance. A real tribute to the power of culture, art, music, film, theater....
