It is with deep sadness that Haley House shares the passing of our colleague and community member, Denise Washington.
Denise was a Roxbury-born educator, poet, historian, cultural organizer, and community builder whose life and work touched generations across Boston. As Haley House’s Urban Agriculture Ambassador at the Thornton Street Urban Farm, she brought her love of gardening, wellness, and community to the Farm, helping create a space where people could connect, learn, and grow. Whether through her Pop-Up Poetry movement, her dedication to preserving Black history, or her work with young people, Denise created spaces where people could learn, heal, express themselves, and feel connected.
Those who knew Denise knew how deeply proud she was of this work while remaining incredibly humble about all she accomplished. Her presence and contributions to Haley House and the broader Roxbury community will be deeply missed.
Our hearts are with Denise’s family, friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. May we hold one another close and honor Denise’s life by continuing the work she cared so deeply about. Rest in Power, Denise.
