I am immensely grateful to the MA Women Veterans Network for their unwavering support and for providing the platform to showcase the stories of resilience and strength captured within ‘Melting Back into Society.’ Their dedication to amplifying the voices of women veterans is truly commendable, and I am honored to have collaborated with such an inspiring organization.

To all the incredible individuals who shared their stories and allowed me to document their journeys, thank you for your courage, vulnerability, and unwavering spirit. Years of Service: 1987 - 1994

Micaila's story is one of dedication, service, and creativity. As the visionary behind the camera for the 2021 Adrian Tinsley Program Research Creative Arts Grant Project, she brings a unique perspective and artistic flair to her work.

Driven by a lifelong commitment to serving her country, Micaila's journey began early on as she volunteered with US Congressman J. Joseph Moakley's office in Taunton during her formative years. Her dedication to service only grew more potent as she spent seven years serving in the Marines, where she honed her skills and leadership abilities.

After her military service, Micaila continued her commitment to serving her community by becoming a Veterans' Service Officer (VSO). Notably, she was the first full-time VSO for the Town of Raynham and made history as the first woman to hold the position in the City of Fall River.

In addition to her service and creative endeavors, Micaila is also a member of the Bridgewater State University Studio Arts, Photography class of 2023, where she continues to explore and expand her artistic talents.

Micaila's dedication to service, coupled with her passion for creativity and artistry, inspires all who know her. Her contributions impact her community and beyond, leaving a legacy of excellence and empowerment in her wake.

Vivian Rogers

US Army/ MA National Guard

Rank: E-6 Staff Sergeant

MOS: Medic

Years of Service: 1981-1995

Vivian is a dedicated Female Veteran who served with distinction in the Massachusetts National Guard 114th Yankee Division from 1981 to 1985. Her journey continued in November 1985 when she enlisted for Active Duty, seeking to maximize her potential in the Army. Deployed to Ft. Stewart in Georgia in January 1986, Vivian served as a Combat Medic with the MOS 91B, rising to Staff Sergeant (E6) through her hard work and dedication.

Throughout her military career, Vivian embraced leadership roles, starting as a squad leader in Nurnberg, Germany. Under the mentorship of her Platoon Sergeant, Rhonda Williams, Vivian honed her leadership skills and carried them forward as she progressed in rank. Despite not being deployed to Operation Desert Storm, Vivian's contributions were invaluable, particularly as the NCOIC of the Emergency Room at W**d Army Medical Hospital, where she ensured operational readiness and trained personnel for deployment.

Vivian's military journey took her through various challenges and experiences, including training in Fort Irwin and deployment to Fairbanks, Alaska. As a Female Veteran, she understands the unique struggles and unseen scars that many women in the military carry. Today, Vivian remains committed to supporting her fellow veterans, advocating for their rights, and overcoming obstacles through various federal and state veteran organizations.

Torrie Osterholm

AFSC: 90310 – Nutritional Medicine Medic

Years of Service: 1987 - 1991

Torrie's journey in service began as a medic in the Air Force, where she provided vital care to her fellow service members. Today, she continues to make a significant impact as a key member of the District of Columbia's National Guard, serving as the Director of Psychological Health. Torrie's background as a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LCSW-C) equips her with the expertise needed to support the mental well-being of those under her care.

Driven by her belief that everyone possesses the potential to be a warrior, Torrie has founded Warriors 2 Moments, LLC. This business reflects her commitment to empowering individuals and helping them realize their full potential. Torrie understands that every moment in life is valuable, and through her work, she strives to elevate others and remind them that every moment matters. With her passion for service and dedication to supporting others, Torrie continues to make a lasting difference in the lives of those she encounters.

Suzette M. Graves

US Marine Corps

April 1981 - September 1983 Reservist in Willow Grove PA
September 1983- March 1988 active duty

MOS: CH-46 Helicopter Electrician

Suzette's journey with the military was deeply influenced by her Uncle Fred, a former Marine, and her father's persistent doubts. Determined to prove him wrong, she embarked on a career that spanned from coast to coast. Starting in the Reserves, Suzette soon transitioned to becoming a full-time Marine.

Suzette wore various hats during her service, including that of a CH-46 Helicopter Electrician with an MOS of 6342. She also served as a supervisor in Maintenance Material Control and played a key role in establishing the GSE office for licensing review and renewal.

Currently splitting her time between Sanford, FL, and Quincy, MA, Suzette's passion lies in giving back to others. She generously donates her time by making homemade beanies for cancer patients through organizations like Knots of Love, which distributes them to veterans and other deserving individuals.

Susan McDonough

Years of Service: 1994 - 1998

Susan's service journey began in the Army, and her commitment to serving others continues to shape her life today. As a dedicated MA Women Veterans Network team member within the MA Executive Office of Veterans' Services, Susan works tirelessly to support and advocate for women veterans. She understands the importance of establishing connections and building relationships within the community, believing that it is crucial for women veterans to be aware of their benefits and to connect with others who share similar experiences.

In addition to her work with the MA Women Veterans Network, Susan is deeply involved with the American Legion, demonstrating her passion for serving her fellow veterans. Proud of her Irish heritage, Susan also plays a significant role in the planning committee for the annual South Boston (Southie) St. Patrick's Day Parade, where she celebrates her roots and contributes to a cherished community tradition. Through her dedication, Susan continues to impact the lives of veterans and her community positively.

MOS: Army Criminal Investigation Division Special Agent

Years of Service: 1979 - 2000

Roseann, known affectionately as Ro, has dedicated her life to serving her country and fellow veterans. With experience in both the Army regular and reserves, Ro's commitment to the military extends beyond her time in uniform. Currently, she serves as the Director of Veterans’ Services for Melrose, Wakefield, and Saugus, where she continues to profoundly impact the lives of veterans and their families.

In recognition of her outstanding service, Ro was honored with the 2021 Deborah Sampson Award, a prestigious accolade celebrating the remarkable contributions of women veterans. As a Veterans’ Services Officer (VSO), Ro remains passionate about advocating for veterans' rights and providing them with essential support and resources.

Ro's unwavering dedication to her fellow veterans is fueled by her belief in the power of veterans helping veterans. With empathy and determination, she strives to empower veterans to find their voice and navigate the challenges they face. For Ro, making a difference in the lives of veterans, their spouses, and their families is the ultimate reward, driving her to continue her vital work with compassion and dedication.

Years of Service: 1972 - 1977 (Active)
1980 - 1993 (Reserves)

Roberta's service journey began in the Marines, where she initially served as an Avionics technician, contributing to the training of pilots until the job was transitioned to civilian contractors. However, a motor vehicle accident altered the course of her military career, leading the Marines to assign her a new role as a Combat Service Technician (CST).

Reflecting on her time in the Marines, Roberta emphasizes its profound impact on her life. She describes her service as one of the most gratifying experiences, highlighting the invaluable lessons in discipline and work ethic that she gained. For Roberta, being a Marine is not just a title; it's a lifelong commitment and a source of pride. She firmly believes in the adage "Once a Marine, always a Marine," recognizing that the bonds forged, and the lessons learned during her time in the Marines will always be a part of her identity. Through her dedication and resilience, Roberta exemplifies the enduring spirit of the Marine Corps.
