The 19th Annual VAFCC Golf tournament was held last month, a fundraiser event with proceeds directly supporting the families and Soldiers of the 211th Military Police Battalion (First Corps of Cadets).

As donations continue to pour in, the event has raised the largest amount in its 19 years, closing in at $10,000.

Sometimes called Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, Juneteenth commemorates General Order No. 3 being read in Galveston, Texas in 1865. General Order No. 3 stated:

"in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired laborer."

We encourage you to follow other historical organizations’ Facebook and Instagram stories throughout the day for videos and articles about the legacy of this important anniversary.

While many people in the U.S. are commemorating the 1777 adoption of the United States' 'stars and stripes' flag, we at the VAFCC are also commemorating the 246th "birthday" of the U.S. Army which was founded June 14th 1775.

"So today let songs be soft and sweet,
For this flowering springtime of the year.
We sing for those who once were young,
And once were happy – and once were here.”
-excerpt of "Requiem" by Lenore Hetrick

Video from the ceremony at Mount Auburn Cemetery will be posted to the member section of our website later this week.
