The growing movement to hold tech companies accountable is falling short when it comes to protecting one of Big Tech’s most vulnerable targets: young children ages birth through 5.

City Plan for the Corner of Parker and Tremont

Starting on Tuesday, October 13 (weather pending), the City’s Streets Cabinet will be doing some construction near the Tremont Street and Parker Street intersection to install a number of street upgrades that will make the corridor safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. The changes include:
Creating parking-protected bike lanes from Terrace Street to Parker Street. This will involve shifting parking away from the curb so that the bike lane runs between parked cars and the curb.
Adding daylighting using white paint to increase visibility at the intersections. This will mean the removal of one parking spot on the south side of Tremont Street, between Parker and Terrace.
Expanding pedestrian space using tactical tan paint that will serve as a quick-build curb extension on the northern leg of Parker Street at the intersection with Tremont. This is a new material for the City of Boston, though it’s commonly used in other cities to increase pedestrian safety.
Restricting left turns heading eastbound from Tremont onto Parker (towards Roxbury Crossing). This left turn has a low vehicle volume, and restricting the turn will increase safety at this intersection for all road users.
In preparation for construction, parking will be restricted on this block of Tremont Street on Tuesday, October 13, Wednesday, October 14, and Thursday, October 15 from 7pm - 5am. We expect eradication of existing pavement markings to take 1-2 nights, and installation of new pavement markings to take 1-2 nights.
For the next construction season, in 2027, the City is evaluating additional changes to this area. Potential changes include adding a fourth crosswalk to the eastern leg of the Tremont / Parker intersection and extending the protected bike lane toward the west.
To discuss these potential changes and other transportation issues in the neighborhood, I’d like to invite you to save the date for a Mission Hill Transportation Community Meeting, cohosted with Councilor Sharon Durkan. At the meeting, Interim Chief of Streets Chris Osgood will share updates on transportation planning in the neighborhood and get your feedback.
